We thank the staff and stu- dents for their efforts. We appre- ciated the work done by the kin- dergarten students. Due to the circumstances this year, we will not have an awards ceremony. The certificates and prize monies will be sent to the schools to be given to winning students. The schools will announce the win- ning entries at the school level. First place entries have gone on to be judged at the zone level. We wish those students good luck.Chairman Billy Mathers ex- tends his thanks to all the volun- teers who took part in this year's Poppy Campaign. Despite the re- strictions placed upon us, we managed to raise almost $13,000. Though this is down consider- ably from the usual $20,000 that we have averaged over the past five years, we still consider this a success under the circumstanc- es. We are especially grateful to 'Sweet Molly's for their extra help in not only the fundraising, but in matching the funds raised on their premises. The ongoing work to our beer cooler is well under way, and should be completed by early January. So, when we are finally given permission to open, then it will feel like we have a new bar. The executive, and their fami- lies, extend their wishes to all our membership for a very Merry Christmas and happy holidays. We hope to see you all soon, in the coming year. This message is from Branch 197 President Wes Kutasienski: The past nine months have been exceedingly difficult for our branch and its members. If I have not done so already, I would like to thank our officers, our execu- tive members and our volunteers for their patience, understanding and efforts. OPINION GREAT SHOWING ENJOYED FOR REMEMBRANCE CONTEST DAVID MALONYColumn GOOD LUCK TO WINNERS WHO MOVED ON TO ZONE LEVEL, WRITES DAVID MALONY On Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2021 the Halton District School Board will be hosting information ses- sions about the board's student census. Beginning in late January, the board will be conducting a voluntary student census, which will confidentially gather data about students' identities, such as their first language, ethnic and racial background, religion, gender identity and, for older students, sexual orientation. Students will also share their perceptions of school climate, sense of belonging and experi- ences with bullying. Sessions will be virtual and offered in American Sign Lan- guage, Arabic, French, Hindi, Simplified Chinese, Spanish, Punjabi and Urdu. Sessions will also be available for Indigenous communities. Individuals are asked to regis- ter for the specific session they wish to attend using a form at https://bit.ly/InfoRegis- terHDSB and indicate a choice between two time slots: 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. or 6 to 7 p.m. The registration form also provides an opportunity to sub- mit questions before the infor- mation session. A Google Meet link will be sent to participants who pre-reg- ister for the sessions. NEWS HALTON PUBLIC BOARD TO CONDUCT STUDENT CENSUS
