Mark was the loving husband to Sue (nee Clouse), and a devoted and proud Dad to Eric and Brent. Predeceased by his father Kaj, he will be deeply missed by his mother Peggy, and sister Caroline (Shawn). Lovingly remembered by in- laws, nieces, nephews and family "across the pond". Mark pursued his desires with passion and energy, which rewarded him with many full and interesting adventures and accomplishments. As a rock climber, he learned the ropes locally at Rattlesnake, and then ventured on to peaks in Yosemite and Wales. After excelling on the luge track at Centennial Park in Etobicoke, Mark earned a position on the Canadian luge team, competing overseas and finishing with the 1980 winter Olympics. Always an airplane enthusiast, Mark reached his goal of earning his pilot's licence, and being able to solo. Years on, he swapped the flying for a sailboat and spent the last 8 years cruising Lake Ontario with family and friends in his treasured Catalina 34. He so enjoyed his time at EYC, whether exchanging stories with seasoned sailors, or putting his woodworking skills to use to maintain the docks. Mark's love of the outdoors and high energy will leave lasting memories with family and so many dear friends who joined him hiking, cycling, skiing, sailing, canoeing and camping. As a Professional Geoscientist, Mark approached his career with integrity and was known for his breadth of knowledge, leadership, and ability to foster collaboration with local peers and colleagues around the globe. After retiring, he was known to eagerly impart his earth science knowledge on any willing listener. Sincere thanks to the many healthcare professionals who supported Mark over the past two and a half years, including Dr. M. Shahideh, Dr. Warren Mason, Maureen Daniels and colleagues at PMH, Dr. Francois Jacques and nurses at Clinique Neuro-Outaouais in Gatineau and the Halton LHIN palliative team. Passed away January 30th, 2021 at his residence after a battle with aggressive cancer. He was born January 31st, 1946 on Bell Island, Newfoundland, moved to Ontario in 1963, only to return to Newfoundland in 1984 resuming employment with Nortel until the closing of the plant in 2000, returning to Ontario in 2012. Tom will join his grandson Ashton, parents Tom and Margaret, In-laws Gordon and Lily Hilts, along with brothers Clarence (Ruth), Gerald and Kenneth. He is survived by his wife and caregiver, Bonnie, daughter Tammy, sons Troy (Cherie) and Thomas (Sherry) as well as much loved grandchildren Kevin, Samantha, Austin, Adam, Aaron and Darcy.
