EHS photo THE WAY WE WERE All Halton District School Board schools will provide free menstrual products for students by September. Dispensing machines will be installed in female, gender-neutral and multi- stall female washrooms be- ginning now during Spring Break and continuing over the summer. "Access and availability of menstrual products in schools impacts the dignity and self-esteem of menstru- ating students and can im- pact class attendance and student achievement," said Jewel Amoah, the board's Human Rights & Equity Advisor. "In keeping with similar initiatives in neighbouring and regional school boards, as well as municipalities in Canadian and internation- al jurisdictions, free access to menstrual products sup- ports both gender and eco- nomic equity as well as to raise awareness of, and des- tigmatize, the natural bio- logical process of menstru- ation." The dispensers, which hold both tampons and pads, will cost approxi- mately $160,000 and an esti- mated $100,000 to stock an- nually. In response to student voice, the Period Poverty Action Plan initiative was approved by the board in 2019 and phased-in at four high schools the following school year.
