Diploma earned with TEAM-work By Wendy Long For many young moms who quit school to raise their children, the TEAM (Teen Education and Motherhood) program offers a sup- portive opportunity to obtain their high school diplomas while staying close to their children, all with no monetary expense. Maria Smith was one such young mom, now the proud owner of a hard-earned Grade 12 diploma. Smith dropped out of high school at age 18 to raise her son Kody. When Kody was a year old Smith tried to continue her educa- tion by enrolling in the mature stu- dent program at Georgetown District High School. “But I was reluctant in are my baby with a sitter,” said Smith. “Kody had asthma, so I would miss quite a few classes.” Smith said that even though the teachers were very understanding, she didn’t always have the time to catch up and had trouble affording a babysitter, so she abandoned the program. Smith waited patiently for a pro- gram like TEAM to come to Georgetown. By that time, three years later, Smith had a second son, Kalvin. But she was excited about the TEAM program and wanted to complete her high school educa- tion. Smith joined the Georgetown TEAM program last year, finally achieving her diploma and high school graduation. “They are all quite special peo- ple,” said Smith about the TEAM staff, “helping, teaching, taking time out for the young mothers and helping make a better future for myself and other young mothers. They made the atmosphere in class fun...yet challenging.” Smith encourages other young oms who want to obtain their high school diplomas to join the ‘ogram. “It’s up to us mothers, whether old or young to set an example for our children,” said Smith. Smith has since married and plans one day to open up a Tooth Chatter ALEX TRENTON, Denture therapist LEARNING TO LIVE WITH DENTURES Learning to live with dentures often good mental attitude and is patient and determined to wear his or her dentures.
