Halton Hills Block Parents need new volunteers to stay alive in the coming year. Current chairperson Elaine Frei (and her daughter Melanie) encourage Halton Hills residents to get involved. In terms of other active volun- teers who do not wish to be on the board, block parents are needed to man community booths at certain times during the year and help out in a myriad of other ways. This year the Block Parent pro- gram of Canada Inc. celebrates its 25th anniversary. It is endorsed by the Canadian Safety Council and has the complete support of police and the private and public school boards. The program began as a “safe stranger” concept to aid children in distress. Mrs. Frei explained that now the program is well-estab- lished the program has moved. beyond that and is for everyone that needs temporary, safe assistance. An example may be a driver whose car has broken down in the winter or someone who is lost. Mrs. Frei said Block Parents are reminded to take down their signs when they are out or are not avail- able to assist, perhaps if ill or out- Block Parents desperately needs executive members side gardening.
