Halton Hills This Week, Saturday; September 19, 1992, Page 21 GLFFL playoffs underway A bit of refreshment was well deserved at Cedarvale last week during Youth Soccer's Day of Champions. By Leanne Fournier The playoffs are underway in the Georgetown Ladies Flag Football League, with the top four teams advancing to the semifinals. On Sunday, Living Lighting beat JV in the first contest of the day by a 13-6 score. In other action, Burns beat QES 24-0 and Amies ate up the purple Deore eaters-O’ Tooles , the JV Jets had players to spare on the sidelines. The teams looked evenly matched as neither could march down the field. As the second quarter began, a JV player made a costly mistake, misplaying a punt that Living Lighting’s Karen Stockfish recov- ered. Living Lighting made the most of the miscue, with Jennifer Palmer scoring the touchdown and Stockfish adding the convert. JV marched again until Mary McLaughlin picked off a pass that lead to Jeanine Larusso scoring a touchdown for ae pesos Jv had a late score by Rosemary Gale- Wysocki and Lisa Linders hi had an Freshman pacing colts return by Kathy Wade Vlaar The month of September at Mohawk Raceway annually attracts North America’s finest freshman pacing colts to compete in Grand Circuit stakes, the Nassagaweya stakes and the lucrative Metro Pacing Stakes. Last Sunday night at Mohawk some new kids on the block found the five eighths mile oval to their liking while some familiar, local colts found their way into the win- ner’s circle as five divisions of the Nassagaweya Pacing Stakes went stward. Native Born, a Nihilator colt from the Bill Keeping stable demolished his opposition as he paced to a six and a half length win in 1:54.4 for driver Mike Lachance for his fourth victory in 7 starts in * the first $57,340 division. Regular Guy was second and Smoke Robertson was third. According to Keeping, Native Born is a high speed horse who’s getting better every time out, “unfortunately we didn’t keep him eligible to the Metro; we zigged when we should have zagged.” Jack Moiseyev, Bill Robinson and Tony Chiaravalle teamed up for a double as they posted back to back wins in the second and third Nassagaweya divisions. Riyadh paced to a 1:55.3 effort for his second career victory over Oh Fore and Village Jiffy in the second division, while highly tout- ed Presidential Ball paced a gate to wire 1:54.4 mile over Wilcos Kosby and Ragtime Band in his division. Both colts are eligible to the $719,700 Metro Pacing Stakes on September 26 (eliminations on September 19) and Robinson feels that Presidential Ball shouldn’t get beat for the remainder of the sea- son, provided he stays sound and healthy. “He has all the parts-speed, heart and flexibility and he’s get- ting better every start.” For Presidential Ball, a son of Cam Fella, it was his seventh win in 10 starts and the sin pushed his bankroll to over $418,000 in earn- ings. Ready To Rumble fought off Graphite John and Crisis Situation for a head victory in the fourth Nassagaweya division with Joe Pavia Jr. in the bike for trainer Bill Popfinger and Upside Equine Sales of New York. Beastmaster came from well off the pace to get up for a length and a half win in the fifth Nassagaweya division, timed in 1:54.4 for driver Trevor Ritchie and trainer Brad Maxwell. It was the Cam Fella off- spring’s fifth win in just 8 season outings and the win puts him over $100,000 in earnings. Lotta Soul was second and Haifalator took show money. Three $40,000 eliminations for The Metro Pacing Stakes go post- ward at Mohawk this Saturday night. The top three finishers from each elimination test will advance to the $719,700 Final on Saturday, September 26. The Metro eliminations go post- ward as races 4,6 and 9 and local starters include Wilcos Kosby, a striking grey son of Laag who has been a consistent performer for trainer-owner Jerry Duford with 5 wins in 7 starts and over $100,000 in earnings. Presidential Ball, Riyadh and Lotta Soul are a triple threat team for trainer Bill Robinson and owner Tony Chiaravalle. Other local con- tenders include Brad Maxwell’s Beastmaster and Village Jiffy form the Bill Wellwood stable. Have you ever dreamed of own- ing your own racehorse? Well, your dream could become a reality this Saturday because Mohawk Raceway wants to put you, your family, and friends in the winner's circle. The People’s Horse promotion is back this fall and this is your chance to experience the excite- ment of owning a horse without incurring the costs. This season Shipps Commander, a four year old son of Direct Scooter, owned by Mississauga developer and prominent horse owner Harold G. Shipp will race as The People’s Horse for the entire fall meet which extends through to December 8. Whenever Shipps Commander races, all registered Honorary Owners will receive free General Admission, plus they'll have a chance to share in the purse earn- ings, meet the horse, and his train- er-driver, Tim Twaddle. So, if you’ve always wanted to be a horse owner — here’s your chance! Sunday night at Mohawk the $100,000 Milton Pacing Stakes for three year olds and up, fillies and Mares goes postward with world champion Shady Daisy headlining the field along with 1991 Breeders Crown champion, Delinquent Account. Round up the family and make plans to attend Mohawk’s annual Fall Fair on September 25’and 26. The Fall Fait has something for everyone including entertainment, agricultural displays, and more to make the game close. The second match of the day saw a glimmer of the Burns of old. Jennifer Reynolds hit Brenda Hamilton for two majors. Joy Thompson and Donna Davey had the other touchdowns. Davey also had an interception for Burns while Colleen Weaver picked off a pass for QES. Burns will now have to. fire on all cylinders in its semifinal contest at 11:30 a.m. Sunday against Arnies. Should be an inter- esting match. The last effort for O’Tooles was a valiant one as Margo Butler hit her receivers with confidence. Speedster Brenda Ryan stole the proved too powerful as Caroline McMillan was in playoff form. Michelle Vellinga had a great day with 13 points while Sue Ferguson had eight. Jodi Jacobs and Donna Brown each added six. In Sunday’s playoff matchups, first-place CIBC, which had an opening-round bye, takes on Living Lighting at 10 a.m., followed by the Arnies-Burns Transport contest at 11:30 p.m. Notes: The football wrapup is Saturday October 10 starting with the awards presentation at 5:30 p.m. at the Lions Hall. Elinesky said the fact that the video is going to the NHL teams provided the players with the incentive to make the infractions as life like as possi- ble. “We almost had to get into an actual game condition and some of the smacks were pretty hard,”’ he said. “I don’t think I’m ready for Hollywood just yet, but maybe after a couple of more.’ Said Ellis: “I’m really looking forward to seeing the finished product.” “When the tape does come out maybe we could get a television in the (Raider) dressing room and show it to the other players. I’m sure they'll get quite a kick out of it.’” Sirota wasn’t available for comment.
