Home of Curling Excitement A Niagara Falls first baseman tries to throw a Fort Erie baserunner at home during weekend action in a tl er Rookie League held at th Dawgs victorious in GMFFL Continued from page 14 never really got the much-needed sense of timing down pat between himself and his receivers through the first half - and in a sense, throughout the game - and the Dawgs loped of the field with an 11-8 first half lead. Dawgs’ Jeff Baylis - the league’s 1992 defensive player of the year - got Hulbert’s game off on the wrong foot with an early intercep- tion. Dawgs followed this up with a touchdown from Al Pelland and a two-point convert from Brad Finucan for an early 8-0 lead. The lead was extended to 11-0 when Frank Bruno - freshly returned from a three gold medal, two world record effort at the Barcelona Paralympics - booted a 45-yard field that just eased its way past the left goal standard. Longhorns’ fortunes improved late in the half, when Bob “Rooster” McCandless woke every- one up by picking off an errant Eagan throw in the end zone. The interception led to a ‘Horns 25-yard field by Dave Patterson, who, appropriately, was sporting a new “doo” for the important game. The second half was a wild-and- wooly affair (Dawgs the former, “Horns the latter) with the Longhorns coming ever-so-close to Rob Rivers scored a touchdown with Paul Allison adding a two- point convert to deadlock the game. Dawgs responded with a Terry Enman major, but the convert was missed, leaving the mutts in front, 17-11. The ‘Horns got their leftovers in gear on Rivers’ second touchdown of the game, converted by Patterson, and for the first time in the contest, moved marginally in front, 18-17. This was where Egan’s magical scrambling ability came into play. Time and again, playing ball- control tactics, Egan gained the yardage required to deny the Longhorns another scoring oppor- tunity. When needed, he hit sure-handed receivers Finucan and Dave Clements - Dawgs team 1992 MVP. - for crucial first downs. Diminutive receiver, Pelland - the league’s playoffs’ MVP - also got into the act, denying the Longhorns crucial possession time. With time running out, Dawgs’ Finucan corralled a touchdown pass and a two-point convert toss for the winning margin. Longhorns had one last bellow left, but it died in their collective throats on an incomplete third- down pass that was wide of the mark, deep in the Dawgs’ territory. "Still Time to Join!"
