“Time wasted" in walkway project Continued from page 1 and construction of the walkway. Councillors Serjeantson and Chatten questioned Linn’s informa- tion. Serjeantson said a CVCA rep- resentative told her they didn’t have a permit application. “With all these funny stories going around, I think it means that a lot of time has been wasted,” she said. _ Chatten said he had ‘also contact- ed the CVCA and been told that “the first time they saw anything in writing (about the walkway permit) was on Friday (Sept. 18).” He expressed his disappointment that town staff hadn’t taken responsibil- ity for submitting the permit appli- cation, but had left it in the hands of the contractor. Chatten said he’s also concerned that the project could suffer a seri- ous delay because a CVCA employee told him that it could take four to six weeks to approve the permit application. “That would -take us into November,” he said, adding that he feared someone would soon be stating that the walkway construction will have to wait until next year. The mayor said he, too, was con- cerned with the time schedule for the project. “I’m surprised to hear of the mix-up with the permit,” he said. “I don’t know the story, but I don’t like the tone of the story, at all,” he added. “I think staff should really get on with this.” In answer to Councillor Rutherford’s question about how the project had fallen behind sched- ule, Linn said when council gave the go-ahead in late July, it also requested that the walkway be built and get approvals right away, Rutherford said. “I don’t like leav- ing authorities connected with this, out of this.” Serjeantson said she’s also con- vinced that MNR approval will be. required because someone with the CVCA told her, “the MNR would Serjeantson said. The walkway was proposed by council because of concern for the safety of Georgetown South residents who walk or bicycle through Hungry Hollow on the shoulder of Mountainview Road. On Monday, council will review Halton Hills This Week, Saturday, September 26, 1992, Page 3 be involved. the project’s work schedule and “This is a life and death situation, discuss its proposed completion I want this walkway in,” date. Development on Acton's east side Continued from page 1 department store and supermarket established on the 54-acre Dominion Seed site. The shopping centre would occupy between 190,000 to 230,000 square feet. The study also recommends that most of the future residential develop- ment in Acton be on the east side of town. It suggests, that as the commu- nity grows, there will be need for a 60,000-square-foot shopping centre with supermarket. It’s proposed that the centre be built on the south side of Highway 7 in east Acton and that it be surrounded by low and medium density housing. Low density housing development means single units, semi-detached and duplex dwellings. Medium density refers to triplexes and townhouses. The Dominion Seed House proposal is opposed by at least one local group, the Halton Hills Construction Association. Al Pilutti, a representative of the Association and one of the guests at last week’s open house in Georgetown, said the association would like to see the Dominion Seed property zoned as industrial so it can attract “show- case industry.” Pilutti suggested that the Guelph Street property could attract many corporate office ne ea and sears industries, sim- ilar to IBM, Bell Telephone and General The association representative said he Se to make a written submis- sion to the town stating his views. All submissions to the planning depart- ment will be reviewed by town staff with the planning consultants before a final report goes to town council in late October or early November. Asked if adoption of the Urban Area Study would make things simpler for Halton Hills from a planning perspective, planning director Ian Keith said, “It will set the pattern for land use for a number of years to come.” Keith also said that, with “careful management,” the town can accommo- date the water and sewage demands for the projected growth in Acton. closer to result, design drawings had to be revised. In addition, soil and vege- tation tests were required. Despite Linn’s suggestion that ‘only has jurisdiction over structures “within the waterway,” Rutherford argued that the min- istry’s approval will be needed before construction of the walkway bridge proceeds. “T would say we deal up-front LOTTERY courtesy of ELECTRONIC SERVICE AT A PRICE THAT WON'T JOLT YOU! * VCRs » HOME & CAR STEREOS PORTABLES + CDs * TURNTABLES « VIDEO GAMES © COMPUTERS + ETC.
