GE OWN (ENTRANCE OFF REAR PARKING LOT) 873-2441 Georgetown Jr. A club opens season with pair of victories Raiders are off to a winning start Charlie Hanman and the Georgetown Chrysler Raiders are off to a flying start. The Central Ontario Junior Hockey League team opened its season this weekend with a pair of wins. On Saturday, the Raiders defeated the Burlington Cougars 4- 2, then claimed a 7-6 overtime win over the Mississauga Derbys on Sunday in Streetsville. While it’s nothing to get overly excited about at this point and time, the two victories put Georgetown atop the West Division standings. But what was more important to coach Hanman was the fact that the pair of wins came with the Raiders ailing, particularly Sunday when five regulars, including two defencemen, were out of the lineup. Blueliners Ante Galic (deep thigh bruise) and Jason Parks (final two games of a four-game suspen: sion) and forwards Britton Taylor (hip pointer) and Dean Roberts (elbow) missed both games and forward Todd McKee sat out Sunday’s contest after receiving a one-game suspension Saturday for being the instigator in a fight. The absence of Galic and Parks meant Georgetown playing both weekend games with only four defencemen. That number could’ ve been three had John McKee not received his release from Richmond Hill late last week. Hanman couldn’t say enough about the efforts of blueliners McKee, Steve Weishar (the Raiders lone returning veteran defence- man), Kevin Moxey and Jason Huminiuck. “They all played well,’’ Hanman said. “When both teams saw we only had four defencemen they tried to take advantage of that, but the guys played smart.” Of course, getting good goaltend- ing in both contests didn’t hurt either. But then again, that’s what Hanman expects from Jason Sirota and Jamie Szyc, both of whom have extensive junior hockey expe- rience. Sirota was in goal Saturday and faced 36 shots. Szyc got the nod Sunday, but Hanman was quick to point out the six goals against Quarterback Monica Mastalerz, cast and all, gets ready to throw the football downfield in second-half action Sunday in the Georgetown Ladies Flag Football League final at Georgetown District High School. Mastalerz and her CIBC teammates went into the final against Arnies as the heavy favorites on the basis of having not lost at all this year (regular season and playoffs). However Arnies came away with the upset victory. Armstrong didn’t tell the whole story. “Jamie played well Sunday,’ Hanman said. “Jason was the rea- son why we won Saturday “Our goaltending was superb. In order for us to win our goals- against average has to be four or less. If we can do that, we’ll be ina lot of our games.”’ On Saturday the Raiders stormed out to a 2-1 first-period lead on goals by Huminiuck and Jim English, who scored on a Georgetown power play. However Sirota was a major factor in staking the Raiders to their lead, turning aside 15 shots. After the Cougars rallied to tie the contest with the lone goal of the second, Trevor Brandt’s power- play goal put the Raiders ahead near the midway point of the third. The following night in Streetsville, the Raiders and Derbys hooked up in a seesaw contest. The visiting Raiders took a 3-2 first-period lead as all five goals came with the man advantage. Brandt, English and Jonathan Levack had the Georgetown goals. The story was much different in the second as the Derbys outscored the Raiders 3-1 to take a 5-4 lead into the third. Randy Bond had the Georgetown tally. Brandt’s second goal of the game, a short-handed marker, lifted Georgetown into a 5-5 tie before the Derbys went back ahead 6-5. English forced overtime, scoring with 3:54 left in regulation. That set the stage for Raider Ian Ellis, who scored the winner at the 1:39 mark of the five-minute over- time period. While being pleased with the weekend wins, Hanman figures the Raiders dodged a couple of bullets with the depleted defence corps. “The wins don’t change the fact that we’re young on. defence,”” Hanman said. “I’m really happy how they’ve played so far, but what we need is two or three more veter- ans back there. “Tf we can shore up our defence I honestly feel we'll be a team to be reckoned with.”” Georgetown returns to league play Saturday, hosting Royal York at the Alcott Arena. Royal’ York is off to a slow start, having given up 32 goals in three losses. Faceoff time is set for 7:30 Goaltending presents Raiders with problem Finn Poulstrup has a problem, but you’d never know it by listen- ing to him. You see, it’s a problem he doesn’t mind having. The Georgetown Chrysler Raiders found out on the weekend goaltender Carmello Giurello was coming back after a brief stint with the Ontario Hockey League’s Sudbury Wolves. Now normally when a general manager of a junior hockey club finds out the goaltender which helped his team finish fourth in the regular-season standings and advance to the second round of the playoffs is coming back, he’d be teady to do cartwheels down the treet. But not Poulstrup. That’s because the Raiders, figur- ing Giurello would find a perma- nent home in the city best known for its nickel mining, went out and signed veterans Jason Sirota and Jamie Szyc to fill the void. Sirota and Szyc saw action this weekend in the Raiders first two games of the season and came away winners. Sirota stopped 34 shots in Georgetown’s 4-2 victory Saturday AND COMPLETE CAR CLEANING We Use * OTHER BRANDS AVAILABLE * FAST * FULL SERVICE Products RY ie Pay for 6 - Get 1 for, FR * OIL CHANGES over the Burlington Cougars, and Szyc was in net for the Raiders’ 7-6 overtime win over the Mississauga Derbys on Sunday Now you see the reason for that smile. “In Jason Sirota we've got a 20- year-old goalie who can stabilize our young defence and keep us in games,”’ Poulstrup said. “I’d have to say right now Jason is one of the top-three goalies in our league. “Jamie Szyc is 19 and we figure next year he could step in and be in the top three. “So. I'd say we have a problem but it’s one of the nicest ones you could have. Raider Baacl Charlie Hanman agrees. “A lot of teams don’t even have one quality goaltender,” with a smile. “We’ve got three.’” Obviously there aren’t enough minutes in a game to keep three quality netminders happy when it comes to playing time.
