Soccer Long season draws to a close by Alex Tough ‘What began in the early spring as promise has ended in the early fall. Success, happiness, fulfillment for some despair and not so much of the good things for others. Some players will retire, most will opt for another bash next year, some will turn to other sports. Meanwhile there is the remain- der of the fall and winter to endure before we again return to the fields to play, coach or manage — or even just watch the young and the older cavort around. The Inter County league came to a close, on the fields at least, last weekend with the playoffs cup finals at Cedervale, looking good with fresh cutting and lining, last Saturday. There is one match to play, the knock-out Challenge cup final between Merseyside and Meadowvale — a first division ver- sus second division tussle. Second division play off winners are Eagles who defeated league winners Meadowvale by 1-0 in a backs to the wall victory. Both teams exhibited different styles of play and physical challenges and kept the referee very busy. Two Eagles, and one Meadowvale, play- ers were given the ejection/red card treatment and a few others were cautioned/yellow carded. Jamie Walraven scored the important goal on a.second half surge past three defenders and trailed the ball into the net. Meadowvale struck wood twice and missed many opportuni- ties to score. Both teams should be promoted to the first division next season. The first division final was won by Merseyside who scored goals without reply from Mariners to take the cup back to Brampton. The first half was exciting for the many fans surrounding the grassy slopes with the play going first one way.then the other. @@@ee020000608080 80 STILL TIME TO JOIN YOUTH BOWLING - Y.B.C - 4 year to 18 year divisions Georgetowu Soul Chances went begging for both squads and the half time break arrived without a_ goal. Merseyside’s goal had a charmed life when Dave Chapman forced a super save from the goalie and Tom. Wenzel struck the crossbar with a header. Mariners had the slight edge. The second half was a differ- ent story as Merseyside became stronger. Tragedy for Mariners when an own goal trundled it’s way into the net followed by two goals which eluded the ‘offside trap’’. The tree goal deficit was too much to make up in the closing quarter of the match. z Diego Maradonna has made it into the Spanish league with Seville, FIFA apparently persuad- ing Naples to allow the Argentinian to move for several millions. The 32 year old will not have much left in his battered legs although he will surely add a few more thousands at the gate to see if he has anything left after his fifteen month suspen- sion for drug use. Once mighty Liverpool are strug- gling near the foot of the English Premier division and Manager Graham Souness may soon find the threat of the axe hovering around should matters continue. Soccer carries on somewhere even if we are over for now, see your later. Canada attempts the route to the 1994 World Cup on November Ist, at Varsity Stadium in Toronto. This is the only chance we will have to see the team for real, unless you are able to travel to St. John and Burnaby for the other group match- es. Toronto is not noted for it’s sup- port of the National team and it would be nice to see and hear more out in support. George Baines has discounted reserve tickets, and you should plan to attend with the youngsters and wave the flag. USA 1994 is the place to be for soccer and Canada should be there, with all the support we can gather. So, even if we are finished here, soccer goes on somewhere else all the year round. See you in the spring.
