Last month, on January 5th, Jack Carpenter died at his home, with his wife Joyce by his side at the age of 96—a month shy of his 97th birthday. Carpenter was born on February 6th, 1926 in Wiltshire, England. As a youth, Carpenter would perform acts on BBC Radio during wartime Britain in the 1940s. It was while performing where he would eventually meet his wife Joyce. They were married in 1951 and worked together as performers at Cabarets. Eventually, as a draftsman for an airplane company in England, Carpenter was transferred in 1956 to Canada to work on the AVRO Arrow project in Malton, and this is when the Carpenters would move into their home on Elizabeth Drive, Acton. Carpenter was employed on the project until its Jack Carpenter passes away at 96 “Music Hall’ - a variety show he would host every Sunday night for a quarter of a century. Outside of broadcasting, Carpenter was a proud resident of Acton and initiated countless commu- nity projects. A major community project the Carpenters put together in 1965 was the ‘Acton Round-Up’, a historical western-style musical at the old arena in Prospect Park. Other projects he spearheaded throughout the years were a proposal to bring the 1974 CFL Grey Cup to Acton, ‘Lighten Up, Canada—Red Nose’ campaign in 1992, and the Acton Trunk Sale in 1994, In recognition of his community work, Carpenter was honoured as Acton Citizen of the Year in abrupt cancellation on February 20th, 1959. Since 1995 becoming out of work, the Carpenters decided to stay in Acton and Jack found other employment which would eventually lead to a return to entertainment, working for a time at CJOY-AM, Guelph, and then on to Kitchener. For many years, Carpenter was a film reporter for CKCO-TV, providing stories from the Acton area.
