The new Acton Churchill Road fire station of the Halton Hills Fire Department officially opened Saturday with fanfare and festivities. Hundreds of people attended to tour the new facility and join in the “ribbon” . cutting celebration. Acton Citizens Band accompanied the processional and recessional marches of Legion Branch 197. Master of ceremony was Captain Bert Venema, who welcomed Mayor Russ Miller, Manager of the central region of the Office of the Ontario Fire Marshall Joop Taylor, architect Tom Brown and Captain Herb Dodds. Dodds was recog- nized for 35 consecutive, active years with the Halton Hills Fire Department. The surprise of the afternoon was the donation of a van to the fire department for a minimum of six months by Achilles Motors Ltd. The van was driven into the hall between audience sections. It received a standing ovation from the fire fighters. The fire station was officially opened by a beaming Chief Bill Cunningham. Cunningham jokingly told the crowd he was bored of seeing Mayor Miller cut official ribbons and introduced an innovative concept: the official cutting of the fire hose. Mayor Miller sliced through it with one swing of the axe. The ceremony concluded with a dedication of prayer by Captain Wade Budgell of the Salvation Army and the successful opening of a long-awaited $1 million plus fire hall to serve the community. Halton Hills firefighter Captain Herb Dodds was honored Saturday, at the official opening of the Acton Churchill Road Fire Station, for 35 years of active service with the Halton Hills Fire Department. The traditional “ribbon” cutting ceremony takes on an innovative twist at the opening of the Halton Hills Churchill Road Fire Station last Saturday as these firefighters carry forth a fire hose turned ribbon and something to cut it with.
