Trail Blazing Scottsdale farm: 6-km on easy terrain Halton Hills This Week is pleased to bring readers Francis Walker’s informative column about one of the great wonders that runs through our back yard — the Bruce Trail. by Frances Walker Today’s walk is at Scottsdale Farm and involves a loop of about six kilometres on easy terrain. The trail is entered off of Trafalgar, Road north of Highway #7. As you proceed north of Trafalgar, you will pass 27 Sideroad on your right. The entrance to the trail is at the top of a hill on your right where a circular drive is located. You may park your car in the drive. Proceed over + the fence and straight ahead and you will see the blue bl: aZzes. ‘The trail will take you past the farm buildings and over a small creek. The Scottsdale Farm was left to the people of Ontario by the Bennett family. This farm is still in operation and the Shorthorn cattle that are raised there should not be disturbed. As you pass by the fence, have a look at the sign that was dedicated on July 1. The trail will cross Eighth Line and continue on the other side. You will cross Silver Creek and walk along its banks. In the spring the banks of the creek are covered with trilliums and the flood plain of the creek with Marsh Marigold. After you cross a stile (a sort of stepladder) you will be on 27 Sideroad. You have just completed the Bennett Heritage Side Trail. You can either retrace your steps for a walk of six kilometres, or turn right and walk along the road for about 1/4 km. (you will be heading west) to the intersection with Eighth Line. Across the road you will see a stile. Cross it and walk straight ahead and you will be on the main Bruce | 4.6 acres, nestled below the hills along the river. ‘Stone and brick, 4 bedrooms, family room, log buming fireplace, 3 car garage. 92-2-463 going off to your left, but that’s another walk! Continue to follow the white blazes as you skirt pastures and cross more streams. Watch for cattle in the fields. You will eventually approach Trafalgar Road along a lane way. Look for the blue blazes again, turning off to your right. The main trail turns left and parallels Trafalgar Road, going south. You will head north across a meadow, climb a fence, and be back at your car for a total distance of seven kilometres. Allow two hours for the full walk. You should wear running shoes. The walk is especially nice in the spring and in the fall. It takes about 10 minutes to get to the access point from Georgetown and about 20 minutes from Acton. This is a good hike for beginners because the trail is well-marked and there are no difficult hills. It can be a bit wet in the spring. If you take this walk and enjoy it, please watch for more walks in later editions. Frances Walker and her husband, Ian, have been residents of Georgetown since 1974. They have been active Bruce Trail members since then and now maintain the section of the trail that goes through Scottsdale Farm. They can often be found out on the trail with Ian’s brother Chris and their dog Maxine - clip- ping, sawing, chipping the wet spots, and just enjoying the beautiful Ontario countryside.
