Parliament Hill report Garth Turner MP Halton-Peel I told you a few days ago about the economic proposals I had given to the finance minister - involving a tax cut, lower government spending and ways to get money into the hands of small business operators. This was based on many of the good ideas that I’ve heard at our Town Hall meetings and other events here in Halton-Peel. Now, as we move towards a major federal budget sometime early in the new year, it’s time to turn up the heat. There are many people telling the finance minister that Canadians want more government money put into public works projects to create temporary jobs. They say that an increase in the deficit doesn’t matter and there may even be room for more taxes. I disagree, and I believe most of the people who live on my street feel the same way. We’re taxed out, and people realize well that increas- ing the deficit today means higher taxes tomorrow. I really believe that middle-class Canadians want less government interference in the economy, not more. After all, the Rae government in Ontario has been trying that spend- more approach for the last two years, and last week the provincial treasurer admitted it hadn’t worked. Now, buried in new debt, they have to hack back on spending - as the feds have been doing for the past eight years. What direction do you want Ottawa to move in? By the way, the last Constituency Survey - a year ago - resulted in close to 4,000 responses, or about 10% of the households that I repre- sent. By direct-mail standards, that was very high. But I could do my job better, of course, if closer to 90% responded. How about it? Many of the questions are based on my report a few days ago to the finance minister, which outlines the ideas for changes, and the reasons for them.
