These are the concerns of Amnesty International. A Halton Hills branch of this organization was formed in March 1991 by Cheryl Broughton. Since then, the Halton Hills Amnesty International has rounded up a membership of about 50 with a core of 15 active members. “As soon as I saw it I knew it was something I wanted to be a part of,” said Kathy Hall, who now ful- fills a role as co-ordinator and member education chairperson for the local group. “I’ve always been opposed to cruelty in all its forms. Even if it was a bully picking on the other kids in the schoolyard, I’d be right in there because I couldn’t bear it...As long as I’ve got breath in my body I won’t stand for it.” Amnesty International’s mandate includes facilitating the right not to be tortured, ill-treated or executed, and ending the grave violations of fundamental human rights.
