Is there a future for broomball in Halton Hills? Dear Editor: Why is the Town of Halton Hills spending $40,000.00 of our money to come up with a Recreation Master Plan? 1, Business is slow for consul- tants these days, so we’re helping them avoid unemployment. 2. The Province is paying half, so what the heck. 3. The consequences of not plan- ning can waste ten times that amount at the drop of a hat. If you answered number three, ou are correct. It’s a well known business fact that if you don’t plan for success, you’re planning to fail. That’s why volunteers like me are meeting regularly to monitor Progress on a study that will give us,a specific plan for the next ten years and guidelines for the next twenty regarding recreation in Halton Hills. With the permission of Town Council, we’ ve written study objec- tives and job descriptions, hired consultants and will keep tabs on the results of your behalf. The consulting firm we’ve hired is top notch. They’ve done dozens of recreation master plans — many in communities of our size. They come with impeccable references. So why did we bring in the big guns for this? Why not let volunteers or Recreation Department staff do this study? We need someone with both expertise and experience in doing studies of this nature. We need someone with the time to devote solely to this project (about nine months in total). Most of all, we need someone who is objective. They have no political agenda, no pet peeves or buddies to appease. What we’ll get is recommendations on what our town wants and needs, along with specifics like what should come first (and where should it go!!!) The consulting team have taken a snapshot of where we are now. They think we’re in pretty good shape compared to other communi- ties our size. They also see room to improve. So hhere’s where you come in. There will be four public meetings, two in Acton and two in Georgetown. The first two will be information gathering meetings (that means we talk and they lis- ten!). These meetings are January 12 at 7 p.m. at Acton High School and January 14, 7 p.m. at the Cultural Centre/Library in Georgetown. Once the rough plan is done in late spring, they’ll be back again to present their findings and obtain feed back before the _ plan is finalized. They are also meeting with the- atre groups, sports groups, seniors and other major interest groups pri- vately and are doing a public ques- tionnaire. These meetings on January 12 and 14 are the the chance for the general public to come. Ask questions! Give opin- ions! Throw tomatoes! (Just kid- ding) - But do come. Let’s get our money’s worth out of this study. Everyone is welcome. Hope to see you there. Lois Fraser and the Recreation Master Plan leering Committee P.S. Acceptable excuses for not attending - 1. I’m moving to Oshawa next week. 2. My idea of recreation is playing Super Nintendo. 3. I’d rather criticize what everyone else comes up with. 4. I ate too many chocolates at Christmas and can’t get out of my chair.
