Police committee needs volunteers By Wendy Long Georgetown citizens are needed to serve on the Georgetown Community Consultation Committee, in conjunction with _ Halton Regional Police, to help put a lid on crime. “At the moment we’re flounder- ing,” said co-coordinator Elaine Frei. “We’re in need of new peo- ple.” The Georgetown committee is chaired by Elaine Frei and council- lor Marilyn Serjeantson. Sergeant Don Cousens (acting staff- sergeant) of 11 Division will act as coordinator of the committee for the next few months. There are currently four commit- tees in Halton Hills: Acton, Georgetown and Halton Hills North and South. There are tenta- tive plans to combine the north and south committees to one rural com- ittee, The Halton Hills North and Acton committees are thriving. They have high community mem- bership and a commitment to make positive changes. “The whole idea is to solicit ae from the public, Cousens, who explained that com- munity policing is changing from Teactive to proactive to help stop community crime before it begins. “The police only know what they’re told,” Frei said. “Citizens can identify various issues to the police,” Sgt. Cousens said. “Through the community con- sultation committee they can address concerns they have to the police. This is going to work.” Sgt. Cousens said police are try- ing to get as many police officers as possible that live in the commu- nity to work in the community. “Tt strikes home when something does happen,” said Sgt. Cousens. Sgt. Cousens has lived in most of his life and thus familiar with town issues a concerns. He himself graduated from George Kennedy, Centennial and Georgetown District High School. His children, aged 7 and 9, are in Georgetown schools. “Let’s be honest here,” Sgt. Cousens said. “We’re having our growing pains in trying to get peo- ple out. But we’re going to work on it and it’s going to happen.” The Georgetown committee meets once a month, except during the summer months, for about two hours. To volunteer, contact Sgt. Cousens at 11 Division, 878-5511, or Elaine Frei at 877-1311. The next meeting is Tuesday, January 26 at 7:30 at 11 Division, 217 Guelph Street.
