Entitled “Garth! Just What the Hell is Going on in Ottawa?”, the book is an “attempt to explain how the system works and how it could be better,” Turner said in a press conference Friday at his Georgetown office.. Turner said the title came from a survey returned by a Halton Hills Constituent. The words were written “in big red letters” at the bottom of the front page. “After having been in this job for four years there’s a number of things I’ve discovered that don’t work so well,” Turner explained. Among Turner’s criticisms are that his constituents are not empowered enough, and that the media and special interest groups have become more influential than the mainstream politicians them- selves. Turner’s book warns that without reform, the Canadian mid- dle class will be gravely threatened. “MPs should be more powerful so the people are more powerful,” Turner said, adding that MPs should be political entrepreneurs instead of political employees and that “one person has a difficult time changing the system.” “If youre going to have a presi- dential style government where everything focuses on the leader then maybe everyone ought to be able to vote on the leader,” Turner said. Turner’s book criticizes Canada’s 19th century institutions and a rep- Tesentative system of government that isn’t working. “The old system was epitomized by Meech Lake...11 white guys behind closed doors,” Turner sai “\uIt’s not enough to bitch and complain in this country. They look to the politicians as if they’re magi- cians...There’s no way the govern- ment is going to make people toler- ant.” The book will be released by Hemlock Press, and is $10.95 for about 260 pages. Initial press run will be 5,000. Turner said all pro- ceeds from the book will go to the Debt Servicing and Reduction Account, an account aimed at reducing Canada’s financial black hole. “I’m not sure it’s going to advance my career,” Turner said. “But like, you know, tough. Trying to represent grass roots people is more important. I want the political debate to move on. According to police, the 20 year- old victim became involved in an arguement with her mother's 42- year-old common-law husband. The suspect pushed the victim who fell over the chest.
