The win allowed the Raiders to leap-frog the Royal York Rangers in the battle for the division’s sev- enth, and final, playoff berth. Raiders now have 18 points with five games to play in the regular season, while Royal York has 17 points with six games to play. Sniper Dean Roberts and Raider goaltender Jason Sirota wore the heroes mantles in the game that wasn’t decided in Georgetown’s favor until the last minute of play. The first period ended knotted at 0-0, while Milton took a 1-0 lead into the third period, courtesy of a Greg Martin goal at the 1:55 mark of the second stanza. Leaving the best to last - with hometown supporters squirming in their seats - Raiders’ Doug Shephard tied the game at the 8:03 mark of the third with an unassisted ‘oal. Then Roberts took things in hand, setting up Trevor Elinsesky for what proved to be the winning goal at 19:25, then scoring the insurance marker himself, with Trevor Brandt picking up the assist with just 22 seconds left to play. Shots on goal weren’t recorded in this tight affair, but Sirota came up with the hot hand when called upon to stymie numerous Milton Raiders top Milton in tense Alcott tilt scoring chances. Milton netminder Brad Glassford also played a solid game. Georgetown’s Ian Ellis and Milton’s Mike Murphy were assessed 10 minute misconduct penalties in the waning minutes of the second period, but otherwise, both teams stuck to hockey. Milton picked up eight minors, while the Raiders were dinged for seven minors. I have to wonder if the cost for this circus justifies the end. May I Georgetown YBC bowlers rake in medals Coached by the premier coach in Ontario, Andy Parent, Georgetown singles reps walked away with a gold, a silver and a bronze stand- ing, at the Y.B.C. Championships in Streetsville on Sunday. The rest of the local bowlers settled for fourth place finishes. In this competition qualifying for the provincials, Jennifer Cabral, a bantam bowler, won the first place gold standing by only a four pin margin over Christina Branco from Brampton, 840 to 836. To do this Jennifer had to come through with a 209 final game. Cindy Clarke, her first try at the senior singles, lost to a seasoned competitor in her final year, Christine Roy of Bramalea. Cindy battled all along, averaging 250 for five games. Rob Harrison, the senior boy, succumbed to over 300 scores by his opponents while he bowled his lowest 200 game in the final game. Nevertheless, his efforts of the day gave him a bronze standing with a 256 aver- The bantam boys’ division was captured by a bowler from Orangeville. Georgetown’s Richard Gostlin, after a slow start climbed into fourth position just 15 pins out of second place taken by Acton. In the junior category, Matthew Walker was only seven pins behind the leader after three games. However, a muscle problem took its toll and after a 213 average his game fell to 133, making it difficult to catch the leader. Closer to home, playoffs bring a breath of life to many a team suf- fering a disappointing season. Our Raiders are no exception. Come on, guys, now you’re close, don’t lose that edge. With Wiarton Willie saying six more weeks of winter it’s too early for our town to go without junior hockey. Hey Raiders, let’s kick some butt. I would like to congratulate Jim Ford on his selection for the Hockey Heritage Award. It’s a well-earned honor. However, I am Congratulations to 'Tubby' Ford somewhat embarrassed because nen told Jim Ford had won I said, Combe from a hockey family I was quickly reminded just who Mr. Ford is and I now realize the prob- lem. Around our hot stove lounge it was TUBBY Ford, not Jim, who was the centre of conversation. Ignorance is bliss and once again, Jim , congratulations on your selec- ion.
