Becky Leferink fires two goals By Ruth Taylor ‘The weather was cold but indoor soccer was hot when the Under 13 Girls League played. Blue player Becky Leferink scored twice but the Purple team kicked in more goals for a 4-2 victory. Jen Westman played goal for the Purples. Angie van Egmond scored on a rebound, Kathy Irwin tucked one into the top corner of the net with a hard kick, Faith Malinosky found a narrow angle from the side for another and Alyssa Taylor picked up the fourth goal for the Purples. Two Yellow team players scored their first goals of the season - Tasha Coates-Palumbo and Colleen Thompson. Colleen scored from “center field”. The intensity of the game was shown when Alanna Zelek, playing defense for the Yellow team, saved a hard ball drive from a corner and was injured on the play. The Red team goalies played strong defense with Kim Moore, Davina Taylor and Bethan Take Coxe) meyelerer=) g Elliott sharing the role, but when the whistle blew, the final score was 2-0 for the Yellow team. Lee Sperduti was the referee. A pre-Valentines match in Acton saw the Little Red Devils team and the Purple team playing this past week. The result was a 3-1 score for the Purple. The players are beginning to perfect the practice of using the walls. For example, Little Devil Davina Taylor kicked one off the wall so that it would bounce to team mate Bethan Elliott who could try to shoot it into the net but Jennie Royce playing on defense for the Purple cleared the goal. The Red goalies were very busy catching as the Purple fired balls relentlessly. Purple players Angie Van Egmond, Jennie Royce and Alyssa Taylor succeeded in getting one past the Little Devils goalie. Then the Little Devils started to “see red” and reciprocated, but only one ball made it in, scored by Kim Moore. Several bounced off the goal posts, with goalie Katherine Tuitman catching them and two were called back because the player was in the crease. Rebecca Culp was busy for the Little Devils both in the corners and with body blocking the balls. -Ball control using the knee is a skill with indoor soccer and the Yellow and Blue teams were dis- playing this in the second game. This ball control resulted in an evenly matched game. A brilliant dribble effort by Becky Leferink using a zigzag pattern in front of the net resulted in one Yellow ball plunged into the Blue net. The Yellow team had several shots on goal by Annie Schaefer and Branwen Williams. Even the refer- ee, Kim Timmings, was hit with a line drive. One goal was disallowed because of the goalie crease rule. Sinead Irvine and Paula Gougeon played hard for the Blue team. The final score was 1-0 for the Blue team.
