These girls, aged 12, 13, and 14 competed against 13 other teams from across Ontario. They are pictured here with coaches Brian Cosgrove and Jim Atkinson. Raiders scale the heights By Colin Gibson From out of the depths of despair to a playoff lair, the Georgetown Chrysler Raiders have scaled the heights in the central Ontario Jr. A West Division. In must-win situations - in order to ensure a post-season berth - the Raiders picked up two crucial weekend wins to lockup the West Division’s seventh (and final) play- off spot, effectively closing out Royal York Rangers 1992-93 shin- hy season. Raiders traveled to Oakville Friday night and posted a solid 4-2 win over the Blades. Saturday night in the friendly confines of Gordon Alcott Memorial Arena, the Raiders turned aside Brampton Capitals 7-5 to post a four-point weekend. The twin wins give the Raiders 22 points, with three games to play, while Royal York was winless in two out- ings last week and with only 17 points and two games to play, the Rangers are toast. Quite a turn around for a team seemingly destined for the post-sea- son obituary column heading into the 1993 portion of their schedule. A buoyant Finn Poulstrup, Raider president, deflected praise for the successful playoff run to the players and the coaches. “It feels great”, enthused Poulstrup. “It feels really good to see the player’s personal pride come out when it was needed and over the last three or four weeks, they have Have your Children's BIRTHDAY PARTY Elaen ke) \| BOWLING LANES cal 853-0470 been a very game group of hockey ayers. ot “A lot of the credit for the turn- around must also go to head coach, Gary Ford and assistants Jay Anderson and Tony Reis,” contin- ued Poulstrup. “They instituted a solid defensive system, the players adapted and it has really paid off.” Poulstrup also singled out goal- tender Jason Sirota for picking up the pace after Christmas. “He played some great games after Christmas,” said Poulstrup. He gave the team some breathing space and the way he was playing, the guys felt they were always in the elt Sirota anchored the Oakville win by making 19 saves in the first peri- od alone, Friday, and 40 overall. The game was deadlocked 1-1 heading into the third period, then the Raiders popped two power-play goals and an empty-netter to salt away the win. Trevor Brandt opened the scoring for the Raiders with Ante Galic, Dean Roberts and Ian Ellis round- ing out the Raider scoring. Brandt and Ellis had single helpers, as did Jeff Charney, David Bouskill and Steve Davis. Steve Weisher picked up two assists. Dan Delmonte and Matt Enterbartolo scored for Oakville. Dave Kennedy started in the Georgetown nets against Brampton Saturday and allowed the Raiders to 354 Guelph St, Unit 27, Georgetown, Ont. (416) 873-1655 move in front 3-1 after the first peri- od. Brampton roared back with three markers in the second period - to but a single reply from the Raiders to tie the game, and Sirota got the nod to man the nets for the third frame. Kennedy made 23 saves over two periods. The insertion of Sirota seemed to inject new life into the Raiders who proceeded to outscore Brampton 3- 1 in the third to sew up the 7-5 win. Trevor Brandt and Steve Davis each scored twice for Georgetown, with singles going to Randy Bond, Tan Ellis and Jeff Charney. Brandt added two assists for a four-point performance, while Davis also collected a helper. Bryan Gendron and Jonathan McKee had a pair of assists, with single assists going to Colin Hooper, Trevor Elinesky, Ellis, Charney, Andy Pazevar and Ante Galic. Raiders have three games on tap this week. Tomorrow night (Thursday) Raiders trek to Caledon for a joust with the Canadiens, while on Saturday, 7:30 p.m. at Gordon Alcott | Memorial Arena, Georgetown plays host to Burlington Cougars. Raiders run out the string for the 1992-93 regular season with an away game against Mississauga this Sunday. This North Bay resident recently won a gold medal at the world downhill Skiing Championships in Japan. Having broken her wrist in her previous competition, a special cast was fitted so Kate could compete in the worlds. Winning a gold medal is an achievement in itself, but to do so with a bee wrist is remarkable. I feel this best exemplifies the true meaning of athletic pride and desire to compete and do one’s best, in an era where it is so easy not to play due to an injury. Some high priced professionals should take a long look in the mirror, sit up and take notice of the example set by Kate Pace. Last week I wrote about playoffs and a new lease on life. The Georgetown Minor Novice Raiders fit that bill. Winning and tying just one game all year this group of eight-year-olds could easily have played dead come playoffs, but haven’ t. Having eliminated Flamborough, these boys are now up against a heavily favored team and if not for a ten-minute bout of Dundas Blues, they have held their own. This alone should make coach and parents alike proud. With another game against Dundas last evening, at press time I hope these future NHLers fared better. dent's racket In any case, congratulations on your long-awaited success. Every week local dart players turn to the Sports Page to see the individual and team statistics of last weeks action in our two area dart leagues. But the question remains is darts a sport or a pass-time. I would like to answer that now “Yes” - it’s both. Got a beef or thought on the week in sports? Oversight In last Wednesday’s edition of Halton Hills This Week, we fea- tured the 1993 Town of Halton Hills Municipal Awards evening. One very deserving team was overlooked in our article. That team was the Georgetown Select Bantam Girls volleyball team. The team, coached by Jim Atkinson and Brian Cosgrove, were silver medal winners at last year’s All Oniario championships. Team members include: Rachel Inglis, Courtney O’Brien, Cheryl Rivard, Bridget Campbell, Lisa MacDonald, Julie Bottomley, Mary Donnelly and Haley Brown. 311 Armstrong Avenue Georgetown, Ontario s “ey j * Restorations * Fine Finishes * Courtesy Cars * Complete Collision Repair 877-8685
