The Cabinet Committee on North American Free Trade was formed to provide people across Ontario with an opportunity to express and clarify concerns about the proposed NAFTA. Its members will be trav- eling throughout the province to lis- ten to your opinions and, as part of making recommendations to Cabinet, to make the provincial government aware of those views and con- cerns. A central purpose of this committee is to help in the formulation of alternatives to NAFTA. Although the negotiation of trade agreements is within the jurisdic- tion of the federal government, Ontario has a critical interest in trade issues due to the central importance of trade to the provin- cial economy. And NAFTA will have major implications for our Province. So even though we’re opposed to the North American Free Trade Agreement, we intend to act forcefully to defend and pro- mote the province’s economic interests in this field as in other areas.
