Little Caesars emerged as the A Division (AAA) champs and bumped off C Division champion Walden in a Grand Championship semifinal. Rideau-St. Lawrence won B Division then beat D Division champs Trenton 7-1 in the tourna- ment’s other Grand Championship semifinal. Detroit, playing their third game of the day, looked sluggish in the first five minutes as Rideau took an early lead on a point blank shot from the slot that found the top cor- er. It was looking good early for Rideau until with just 1:39 left in the opening period, a poor clearing | Bryan Lewis, the NHL’s director of officiating and a Georgetown res- ident, took time out to chat with Halton Hills This Week reporter Mike Zrostek prior to refereeing a game in the 33rd annual Georgetown International Bantam Hockey Tournament. attempt resulted in a Detroit goal with three seconds left as the Little Caesars made it 2-1 on a nice indi- vidual rush by Kimu Mau’u. Detroit came out flying in the second and scored 17 seconds in on a soft goal that found it’s way threw the legs of the Rideau goalie. That goal dictated the period as Detroit added three more while limiting Rideau to one. Thanks in part to some strong Detroit goal- tending they left the second with a commanding 6-2 lead. Rideau didn’t have anything left in the final period and the disci- plined Detroit squad, who played a tight-checking style throughout the tournament, kept Rideau in check while adding two soft goals making the final 8-2. Kimu Mau’ was named Most Valuable Player for Detroit with two goals and two assists. Other Detroit markers came from Ryan Zoller, Jason Reibling, Josh Carter, Jimmy Mroz, James Patterson and Chris Lebar, Stephen Moore was the MVP for Rideau-St. Lawr Scoring for Rideau St. Lawrence in the Grand Championship match were Scott Ferguson and Stephen Moor re. The Raiders made it 2-0 when Boere popped one in again near the mid-point of the period with Boucher and Jeff Hewitt assisting. Brad Spears made it 3-0 with an unassisted goal and it appeared Georgetown was on it’s way. Walden came back, as they did throughout the game, with two quick goals making it 3-2 after two periods of play. Georgetown opened up another two-goal lead when. Marc Boucher got his third point of the game giv- ing Georgetown a 4-2 lead. It appeared the Raiders were on their way but with 3:21 left in the third, Walden cut the lead when Mike Robinson scored. Less than a minute later Walden tied it up send- ing the game into overtime. Unfortunately it wasn’t ‘meant to be for the Bodanis Raiders as Walden scored with 1:13 left in overtime for the win. The Walden bantams went on to lose to eventual tournament Grand Champion Detroit Little Caesars, 9- 1 in a Grand Championship round semifinal game. The other two local hopefuls in the tournament, the Halton AAA Hurricanes. and Georgetown Marketplace bantams, didn’t make it out of their individual groups.
