They were sworn in at a ceremony April 2. Georgetown police service beefed-up By Oksana Buhel * Three new police officers have joined Georgetown Division of the Halton Region Police Service. Constables Daryl Longworth,23, Rui Freitas, 21, and Erin McCune, 25, were three of 14 constables sworn in by Chief of Police W.I. James Harding at the Halton Regional Centre, April 2. Harding reminded the new con- stables it was their duty-to care for the community and for each other. “This road of policing has been long and interesting,” admitted Harding, who will be retiring in June of 1994. He also. mentioned that the road has been challenging. “Hold in account everything you say, you do, and you believe in,” the chief instructed the constables. Harding described some of the challenges which the constables can expect to face. With respect to multiculturalism, Harding insisted that “mischievous. myths” are circulating, which are “detrimentally wrong.” He instruct- ed the officers that their duty would be to remain sensitive and under- standing. Based on the findings of staff's public consultation process, it is recommended that smoking be controlled, at varying degrees, on the following types of premises: * retail stores ¢ mall concourses ¢ service lines ¢ reception areas hairdressers, barbers ¢ laundromats ¢ restaurants health care facilities * elevators, escalators, * taxi cabs stairways ¢ limousines * amusement arcades « places of public assembly ¢ places of amusement (e.g., theatre) (e.g., bowling alley) The general Committee Meeting will commence at 7:00 pm on Monday, April 19, 1993, in the Council Chambers, 1 Halton Hills Drive.
