Scouting service recognized John Ollivier, Marketing Manager for Halton Cable Systems was recently awarded the Canada 125 Medal for his involvement in Scouting. The medal, struck to commemo- rate Canada’s 125th year of Confederation, is bestowed upon those who have made a significant contribution to the community. Olliver’s medal was presented at a planning and development meet- ing for the Central Escarpment Region of Scouts Canada, which includes Georgetown, Acton and Milton as well as Oakville, Burlington, Brampton, Malton and Bolton area. “It was a surprise, of course”, said Ollivier. “I had just finished a presentation, coincidentally about hgnors and awards, when the Region President called me back so that he could read the letter from the Governor General’s office and pin the medal on me. I enjoy Scouting for the many things I get ut of it. 1 wasn’t a Scout when I was a kid, but I sure wish I had been. Usually, people have the idea that Scouting is hiking, tying knots and camping. Sure, it is that too, but so much more. “We have a saying that we influ- ence young people to grow up to be the kind of people you’d like to have as neighbors. That’s even more important now, and as we approach the 21st century. “But adults can gain so much as well. Tt at you a lot about a person.” The Canada 125 medal is granted through the office of the Honorable Ray Hnatyshyn, Governor General of Canada. Nomination for the award is usually made upon the recommendation of others in the movement to which the designate longs. Ollivier has been in Scouting for 20 years, starting service with the 5th Georgetown Group. More recently, he held the office of Region Commissioner for five years. He currently works on the Provincial Scouting committees for Public Relations and Quality, and is Public Relations officer for Central Escarpment Region, and is a train- er.
