It’s best to keep your eye on the ball-at all times during girls under-13 soccer. The Consolation Final and Championship Final are slated for Saturday, games starting 3 p.m. at Acton High School. photo by Simon Wilson/HHTW By Rod Beaumont Ever wonder what happens to ex- NHL coaches with losing records? Well, if you haven’t figured it out, they become color commentators for Hockey Night in Canada. I find it hard to put much stock into the ramblings and analytical, probings of a person who, for the most part, never had a winning sea- ‘son. I’msure-the majority of hockey fanatics tune in nightly just to find out how these commentators would have-matched minds with the likes of Bowman, Burns, Cherry and new head Ranger coach, Keenan. I’m not saying these gentlemen are coaching icons, but I’m sure a person like Keenan would put more of an insight into line matchups and game strategy than what we’ve endured so far. I’m aware Keenan is unavailable due to his commitments with Team Canada at the world championships, but if hockey is on our TV plate nightly, I think we deserve better. Speaking of nightly, I just bet there are quite a few non-sports fans doing a slow burn lately. With the NHL playoff schedule the way that it is, we sports fans are in heaven, with CBC showing games nightly, sometimes two, and TSN covering those not covered by CBC. Also, throw in the odd Expo and Blue Jay game on TSN and CTV and there is little relief for the non-fan. Don’t dispair, non-fans, the play- offs should be over around the first week in June. As for the fanatics, sit and enjoy, I know I will! Who says Toronto fans are quiet. This also earned them a prize of $100 each, after fin- ishing second to the men from Kempview Bowl, Barrie. Any one of the teams, with a few more years practice, will be able to play at the community college level with the Sheridan Bearcats - the college girls Indoor team. i The low scores are the result of brave defending, tight plays and fast-passing during this last week before playoffs. All the games had a 1-0 score. In the Yellow versus Little Red Devils game, Colleen Thompson scored the winning goal for the Yellows with a hard line drive that stuck to the back of the net. A few good team plays with accurate passing from Red Devils forward Kim Moore across the crease to Jen Tremblay did not succeed in chang- ing the final score of 1-0. Pulling the Red goalie in the last minute of play did not help either. Highlights included a fingertip save by Yellow goalie Stephanie Lefebvre, a rolling lunge save by Red goalie Alyssa Taylor and long kicks by Little Devil Amanda Burgan and Yellow player Kerri Neilsen who aimed one down the line missing both coaches’ heads by in hes. Tasha Palumbo-Coates caught the ball well for the Yellow side while Yellow forwards Annie Schaefer and Branwen Williams poured on the shots. Jen Elliott and Alison Hawes played strong Yellow defense. The Purple and Blue players played with great precision. At one point, there was a.great clap of thunder but it was Blue player Halton Hills This Week, Wednesday, April 28, 1993 — Page 15 Paula Gougeon and Purple player Jennie Royce hitting the ball at the same time. The Purple team kept Blue goalie Becky Leferink busy. One Blueshot broke the bar of the net but, undeterred, Purple goalie Katharine Tuitman continued and saved three in a row. Purple players Kathy Irvine and Jen Westman played good defense in the comers against charging Blue players Sinead Irvine, Kristina Zelek and Carolyn MacNeal. Then, in the second half, a loose rolling ball appeared in front of the Blue net and Purple player Alyssa Taylor booted it in for the final score of 1- 0 for the Purple side. The Purple players went on to face the Yellow players in the third game. It was obvious the indoor players were anxious to get out to the green fields since the fire doors opened on one corner scrum and (ere) fe (=a Xe [=m = Lond) High Triple Flat Ladies: Vera Peavoy 676 _ Men: Trev Williams . 681 High Triple with handicap Ladies: June Murphy 783 Men: Harvey Peavoy 19 | High Single Flat _ Ladies: Flo Carswell 313 0. . 264 | Championship game slated for Saturday : the ball flew out. There was a restart with a drop kick and then a problem with too many players on the court after.a hand ball. Purple player Angie van Egmond was busy getting near-goals that were.called back, including one that was on the goal line with the goalie on top. Another ball was a high flyer inches over the crossbar. A ball rolled up and over Purple player Angie Crane in mid-field but she aimed it at Kathy Irvine who passed to forward Jennie Royce. Purple player Faith Malinosky aimed a good one to teammate ‘Trisha Edwards on the other side of the crease but Yellow goalie Alison Hawes caught it. Yellow teammates Leah Crane and Alanna Zelek kept the ball in the Purple zone. On a fumbled ball, Yellow striker Stephanie Lefebvre curved a fast one into the Purple net from right court for the 1-0 score and the game was over.
