Page 14 — Halton Hills This Week, Saturday, May 15,1 Georgetown Optimist Club supports the law By Oksana Buhel In recognition of Respect for Law Week, the Optimist Club of Georgetown honored two local res- idents and two local police officers last Tuesday for making outstand- ing contributions to law and order. Adam Cook of Georgetown, Robin Peever of Acton, and Halton Regional Police Service Village Constables Bill Riddle and Nick Leoni, of Acton and Georgetown respectively, received plaques and commendations. Cook saved eight lives on July 1, 1992, when he awoke during the night, surrounded by thick smoke. The 10-year-old woke his mother, who woke other family members and basement tenants, and all were able to escape. The boy was also honored Wednesday evening at the Halton Regional Police Service annual awards night. Peever was recognized for assist- ing two officers in an arrest November 28. One officer was kicked in the face by a suspect and knocked down. Peever helped the fallen officer, then helped the other officer get the suspect into the ice car. Constables Riddle and Leoni were both praised for their contri- butions to the force and for extra- curricular commitments. Riddle is involved with the Acton Social Service and Information Centre, the Acton Open Door Teen Drop-In Centre, the Acton Community Consultation Committee, various seniors’ pro- grams, organizing fraud seminars, boy scouts and food banks. Leoni is similarly dedicated, donating time to seniors programs, the Georgetown Open Door Teen Drop-In Centre, board member of the Business Improvement Association, the Georgetown Community Consultation Committee, organizing fraud semi- nars, and various fund-raising vents.
