Page.14 — Halton Hills This. Week, Wednesday, May 19, 1993 Women’s Institute report By Betty Sojka Mrs. Grace McEnery gives us the following Women’s Institute report. The May meeting of the Ballinafad Women’s Institute was held at the home of Mrs. Don Brown on May 5. This was the agricultural meeting with Helen Brown as convener. The evening was devoted to edu- cation and agriculture among school children as the main theme. After opening exercises and the reading of the minutes of the last meeting, the roll call “Ideas for Making the Love of Rural Living in our Young Pe visitors. E.g., “The beauty of nature”, “4-H Clubs”, “fostering love of animals”. The program came first, we were fostering the theme of agricultural awareness in the classroom. So many children in spite of living in the country, are Not part of the farming activity nor aware of the animals or machinery that surrounds them. This is bad enough for town and city children, but with so much urban sprawl, there are many children to be edu- cated. We had two speakers bringing in suggestions on what is being done in our area to improve.this situa- tion. Mrs. Ruth Kranendonk of the Halton District W.I. was present to tell us of the “Dairy Discovery Days” to be held at the Halton Agricultural Museum from June 9- 13. School children will be brought to see dairy activities from feeding the cows to milking and production of butter and cheese, as well as equipment pertaining to dairy farm- ing. Everyone is welcome to come. Bus loads of children will be com- ing from all over Ontario. The second guest was Mrs. Eileen Brown, president of the ladies division of the Erin fair. She brought a-video of the educational day for children at Erin Fair, which is held on the Friday before Thanksgiving. Most fairs have a Friday Education Day, but Erin is rather unique. They bring ‘in all types of livestock and have a pet- ting zoo. Hands-on is the motto. The pupils see the cows being milked and even try themselves. They have bales of hay and straw and play in it. This video is called “Agricultural Awareness in the Class Room”. Although we live five miles from Erin, few of us were aware of what agricultural education goes on for children. The business was conducted which consisted mainly of plans for the Halton District Annual meeting to be held at Brookville Hall on May 27 from 2 on, with supper and an evening program. The District Day is June 27 at the Gamble Barn at the Agricultural Museum with a box social supper. Helen Brown as con- vener called upon Ada Kirkwood, for the motto “A Man has the True Concept of Life When he Plants a Tree Under Which he Never Expects to Sit”. She discussed the value of trees in our environment and told of the thousands planted last year. Grace McEnery was responsible for current events. She called on each one present to recite a happen- ing in the last month. We learned we have two stories for the National W.I. competition written by Reggie Slessoraitis and Eleanor McLean. After the lunch prepared by Eleanor McLean and Alma Sinclair, our annual plant sale was held. There was brisk bidding on the plants auctioned by Doreen Burt. Monies go to the welfare fund. Last week’s Hall Board meeting was very productive as neighbors and members aired the concerns of the new fence to be put by the soc- cer pitch. Many valid points were raised, and it was decided to get a Price on a six foot fence, and not to include gates into private proper- ties. Lights for the baseball diamond were discussed, but because of the immense expense it was felt this expenditure would not be in the near future. The Hall Board is plan- ning on having a clean-up day at the park on Saturday, June 5. Please call Jim Bailey at 877-6651 and Bonnie Walker at 877-6639 for more details. There is garden work to be done, mulch is needed to be donated, and the area between the hall and the cemetery needs a real clean out. Both Erin Tsp. Councillor Doris Topolsek and Halton Hills Councillor Robert Heaton were at the meeting to give their input and news of their perspective councils. Rob Heaton stated that the Halton Urban Structure Study was now 1400 pages and that the Regional Official plan, as well as Market Value Assessment, is under review. Don’t forget that Saturday, May 29 is your chance to check out the current craze of Karioke. The Hall Board is sponsoring this dance that gives you the opportunity to sing ! your heart out. Tickets cost $5 and are available at the Ballinafad General Store. There will be a prize for the best entertainer, as well as the usual spot and door prizes.
