They are. Beneral- ly put into two main groups: mod- ern climbers, including climbing hybrid teas; and ramblers. Ramblers were popular in the late early summer. They grow_to an average height of about 12 feet. Some species roses are also climbers, the most famous being R. filipes Broup with: Filipes Kifts; more than 30 ‘by 20 feet. Tolerating considerable shade, it is ideal for growing up into a tree where it can hang out its rich- ly scented single white flowers. R. Victorian and Edwardian eras. However, if tastes lean to the more gentler tones, climbers come in a full color range. New Dawn is a superb rose with continuous silvery pink, semi-dou- " ble flowers. Awakening is a fully double sport of New Dawn with sumptuous old-fashioned, quartered flowers. These two actually belong to the R. wichuriana ramblers but are the best known of the group and the only continuous flowering ones. Both grow to about 10 by 8 feet wide. Mme. Alfred Carriere is a Noisette climber with scented blush semi-double flowers. It isone of the few roses which can tolerate TH. BRIGGS UPHOLSTERY a north wall and grows quite well in a shady location. However, it will not have quite as many flowers as in a sunnier spot. When choosing a climbing rose, keep in mind the location that you want it for and the ultimate size of the plant that you have in mind. Some grow to about 8-to-10 feet tall by 6-to-8 feet wide while others can cover the entire wall. Don’t buy one that will grow too large otherwise you will be forever pruning it back. Also, give it enough horizontal space to spread out. The more hori- zontal the canes, the more flowers will be produced. For small areas, some of the larger shrub roses can be trained as climbers, as well. Roses are not true climbers as they need support in order to climb up. Climbing roses can be picked out by the large downward curving hooks on their canes which they use to grasp. The standard support is‘ a trellis. Again, make sure that it is tall and wide enough. Most are unfortunately too small, so if you are handy or know someone who is, it is best to make one instead. The trellis should also be set on stand- offs or spacers so that it is 6 inches away from the wall for good air cir- culation around the plant. The rose should be planted 12 inches away from the wall and if the roof over- hangs the plant, make sure that it gets enough water. How you prune your climber depends on the type you buy. Remember though, to prune newly- planted roses severely to encourage basal growth. Modern climbers, noisettes and tea climbers flower on the same year’s growth on lateral shoots and send up strong vertical shoots. Over the first few years, train the shoots in several directions over the support and let them grow. Prune the lateral growths from these shoots back by about two thirds. These “spurs” will produce flower- ing shoots which, in turn, can be pruned the following spring to pro- duce more flowers, and so on. Ramblers flower on wood produced the previous year. They generally produce thinner and more flexible canes. They should be left to grow freely while being trained on their Support and any pruning should be done in the summer after flowering. Winter killed wood can be removed in the spring, however. Roses allowed to climb into trees and cover walls shouldn’t be pruned at all except to remove ns peo When they become too lar; they should fe pruned after flowering (taken from Peter Beales “Roses”).
