Ruth Taylor ‘occer parents are breaking out the Mosquito repellent as the season Starts. Kira Lawrence of the PoppaCom Gold team was the big scorer of the week in Under-11 girls soccer with three and teammate Danielle King netted two as the gold team faced- off with the Green team. In the first half, the teams were evenly matched as Gold defender Stephanie Fielding kicked away the Teen advances while Rhonda Myers and Ashley Campbell hus- tled. There was a breathtaking near- miss alongside the net by Green player Andrea Lootsma; then at the other end, Green goalie Karen Zomer had to chase a long kick from under a car at the Mackenzie- Smith field. In the second half, Green goalie Melissa Maveal saved three good shots by the PoppaCorns but the Greens ended up on the short end of the 5-1 score. Their lone marker was scored by Keri Hofing while Ashley Carlton and Jessie Locke played well. The Blue Optimists and Orange Linda Armstrong/Johnson game had a slow start. Referee Aaron Williams had to call a few hand- balls and three offsides. Blue player Becky Culp limped off after an injury but ran back after treatment. The Orange team is waiting for Angie Crane’s arm to heal so she can join the team. Orange player Vanessa Taberer was busy turning balls away from the Blue team and Linda Sproule. Jacquie Bajic played well on offense and Shaylyn Rypstra showed great positional play for the defense but the score remained tied at 0-0. ie of the week, the Acton Elizabeth Street field was used for the first time. Occasionally, the ball ended up in the puddles and tall grass alongside the field and the girls had to do throw-ins with a wet ball. The Red Millier’s TV team kept the action in the Orange side during the first half and right halfback Alyssa Taylor got a toe on the go- ahead goal from a breakaway run. After looking for a teammate for a pass play, Orange player Alanna Zelek tucked one in the comer of the Red net herself. During the game, there was effective backward footwork from Millier’s Red play- ers, Stephanie Hynds and Sharilyn Kogon and long kicks’ with quality from Bethan Elliott and Kristal Westman. Orange player Brooke Lindsay, stopped one long kick with her face but recovered to play the game and Kim Lindsay shadowed well.
