Well, actually there is one dinosaur, but not the type that has been hanging Out in a mosquito’s tummy for 650 million years. The dinosaur in Dave is. the political system as we know it — and are more dissatis- fied with — everyday. Following a novel plotline, Dave Kovic (Kevin Kline) lands a short-term job as a stand-in for the United States President. The job, however, proceeds to a long-term engagement when the real President suffers a stroke. Fearing the loss of their power, the President’s henchmen (Frank Langell and Kevin Dunn) quickly realize that maintaining Dave as the stand-in is their only means to keep their power. Devoid of the career and per- sonal strains under which the real President was under, Dave intro- duces humanity and compassion into the presidency. The question becomes: can this approach actu- Movie Review ally take hold? Kevin Kline does an admirable job in the role of Dave. You couldn’t help think, however, that a young Robin Williams would have been brilliant in the role: The President’s wife, Ellen Mitchell, is played by Sigourney Weaver, who looks a lot better with a full head of hair and no aliens to blast to kingdom come. The Vice- President is played by Ben Kingsley, who delivers a strong and powerful performance, despite only a small role. The movie is dotted with cameos throughout its length, including a number of members from the U.S. Senate and Congress who all play themselves. Dave (the movie) raises some interesting ethical questions about power and responsibility. But at the heart of the movie is the issue of what is the role of government. P.S. In the credits, it is noted that no animals were harmed in this movie and the use of animals was overseen by the American Humane Society.
