« Hills residents honored at Senior’s Fair By Oksana Buhel Six Halton Hills residents were honored at last Saturday’s Seniors Safety Fair, held at the Halton Regional Centre in Oakville. The event was attended by more than 2,000 seniors, Region Chairman Peter Pomeroy, Halton Regional Police Services Chief James Harding, municipal mayors and celebrities Sparky the Pee and Ronald McDonald. Councillor A Cook, represent- ing mayor Russ Miller, thanked local residents Ross Bethel, Flo Carswell, Lois Fendley, Helen Giguere, Neila Mowat and Les Mellish, for their work on the Halton Hills Seniors Advisory Committee. The committee is one of four municipal committees which counsels the region’s Elderly Services Advisory Committee/Good Neighbors Council (ESAC) on issues affect- ing seniors. Joanne Kaczmarski, community services and elderly services co- ordinator, said the committees played important roles in the region’s Strategic Planning Study. Their expressed concern about safety inspired the theme of this year’s fair. The fair was timed to coincide with senior’s month. Fifty exhibits on crime preven- tion, fire safety and home adapta- tions were featured, along with police-conducted safety seminars and tours of police headquarters, an antique car display, aerial firetruck and other safety vehicle demonstrations, and discussion about wills and power of attorney. Entertainment was provided by the Grace Memorial Church Hand Bell Choir, the Oakville Entertainers, Halton Regional Police Choir and the Happy Soles Line Dancers and the Great Pretender.
