L y, There was some wild Inter-County Soccer League action around the net area at Georgetown’s Gordon Alcott soccer field when the Georgetown Blazers nipped Streetsville Winchesters with a 2-1 victory in what could best be termed a very physical game. Germany tops England for USA Cup By Alex Tough Germany came, saw and con- quered in the USA Cup, 1993. They defeated a lack-luster England 2-1 to win the tourney outright from Brazil, USA and England, in that order, without losing a game. Brazil had a win and two ties against Germany’s two wins and a tie. Although details of the tour- ney are somewhat sketchy at this point (Sunday afternoon) the whole was a success. The final game crowd was just over 52,000, the largest attendance since the Los Angeles Olympic final. All the arrangements were up to a high level of competence and the USA and FIFA officials must be satisfied. The TV coverage, certainly only of the USA games, was the first class and on a par with Mexico coverage in their World cy p. Back to the England/Germany game for a moment. The Germans began the game, according to one account, just as though the coach punched in a computer program and everything ran smoothly from start to finish. The English players were ragged and less than skillful with a lack of idea. Three out of the four competitors will be pleased with performance and one certainly will not. England is in the doldrums and their stodgy style will not achieve at the world level. The weather was the winner again last week, or was it? The sprin- Klers were disconnected, yet came on a few minutes after CRSC United’s game with visiting Streetsville began. On Friday, again at Alcott, the lights failed to come on. The usual call was placed to the town and answered within 30 minutes, which was fine. However, the rep- resentative did not have a key to the centre to enable him.to do anything and the game was called off, the visitors again from out of wn. s However, the grass is cut regu- larly in spite of everything else, which is going wrong. No further comment. Meteor continue to lead the first division. of the senior Inter- County League. The lads fought a hard battle with Mariners before sealing a 2-0 win with a late’goal as Mariners pressed for the then equalizer. Both teams’ goalies brought off more than one fine save to keep the match close. Blazers pulled off the double win also. They defeated Winchester 2- 1. Winchester could only field nine players for this one. Mersey won. 3-2 over Meadowvale to remain in second place. Blazers win puts them into third place, a fine showing to date. Second division leaders, Eagles, did what very few teams have been able to do in recent years. They put four goals past the tight defense of United. United is sport- ing a much younger team this sea- son, with just a sprinkling of experienced players in the squad. Falcons defeated Milton 3-1, a much expected result. Caledon round off the results with a 4-0 win at Stingers. The recent league meeting held the second round. draw of the knockout Challenge Cup. An open draw takes place with all teams “in the hat”. Stingers fielded one more play- er than allowed in their first game of the season, which they won. The game was awarded to their opponents, Milton. Three players who were ejected were given sus- pensions of between two and three games. Another case to be heard next week is one of two teams claiming that both had a player ejected, and the wrong player was reported in each case. A referee, not locally, has been reported as using obscene language towards players, now there is a change! The league also discussed the possibility of an end of the season banquet and awards evening.
