By Alex Tough Canada’s World Cup team squad was named-last week with the upcoming CANCAF Gold Cup up for grabs with eight countries in competition. Two groups of four contest a round- robin, two teams from each group qualify for the semi- finals-which are knock-out. Canada plays Costa-Rica, Martinique and Mexico - not an easy group. The competition actually opened on July 10 and the round robin finishes on July 18 with Canada meeting Mexico. The semi-finals are in Dallas and Mexico City on July 21 and the final, in Mexico City, on July 25. Canada opened the series with a 0-0 result with Russia. The 1994 World Cup has 52<games and every one will be carried by TSN on a feed from BBC, London. Locally, Meteor continue to lead the Inter County. A much depleted squad defeated Winchester away by 4-0 to retain first place. Meteor have only dropped three goals in nine league - games, a superb achieve- ment. If I may say so, this is due to the defensive efforts of Donald Bruce in goal and John Marley and Dave Banks central defense play. Merseyside served notice they are not to be trifled with and awaiting any slips Due to a scheduling mix-up, Falcons vs. Caledon did not get off the ground and is tentative- ly set for August 18. In the knock-out cup, Eagles beat Stingers 4-2, a late result notified to the league. Meteor and Mariners had another try at playing their first round game last Friday.
