PERSONAL ‘AM (Teen ae mn and WALTON HILLS FIRE DEPARTMENT with Bill Ellis THE SHOES Pat has suggested, recent- ly, that I should throw out my old suede shoes. As a matter of fact, she has threat- ened to throw them out when I am not looking. Of a neces- sity, I have had to find anew place to hide them. I guess she is right. They look quite shabby. The actual suede finish is long gone. They are no-longer the light beige color I was so pleased with when I bought them. They are the loafer type and quite a bit of the stitching is long gone. The right one has a bad tear down the outside of the shoe — like down to the sole. Pat exaggerates when she says my right little toe sticks out of the tear — only my sock sticks out! The heels are wom on the outside corners, and when they are sitting in the closet, they have the appearance of two sinking ships. But how would I ever replace the comfort! My feet really relax every time I put on those shoes. There is a certain feeling of security and familiarity every time I put them on. I have only experienced this feeling once before and that was with a winning hand on the pants. ee refused to repair‘ them it sore aaa tle for me to wear them-in™ view: of the:location: of the split ames 8 ‘ome back to school young moms. Can finish grade 12 at no cost to you. Childcare oa Monday to Friday 1pm-4pm. For informa- tion call resect 877- 8201, or 877-1535 Acton 853- 0690 or 878-1240. Register ir September. I have no idea how long I have had these shoes. When I think where they have trod, it would be criminal to throw them away. They walked the sands of English Bay and the tock of Grouse Mountain on a weekend in Vancouver. They strutted the streets around Hollywood and Vine in Los Angeles on a busi- ness/holiday. They have marched the malls of Florida. They have sauntered the beaches of Maine on various excursions. As they grew older, they struggled with lawn mowing, tocrats of footwear have been brought to such a level. The cruelty of it all. Considering that my toe gets wet when I wear them in the rain, it is obvious that I will have to negotiate some kind of settlement with Pat. Now let me see — I guess it would be too costly to have them bronzed. Maybe I could agree to “retire” these shoes <s bat throw them out — never! Ttis s just possible this-con- “cession on my part will get ,Pat to.buy me a new pair... What do you mean — peo: | ple don’t wear blue suede shoes anymore? .
