Third place battle looms in gridiron loop By Colin Gibson Only two weeks remain in the Georgetown Mens Flag Football League regu- lar season and the battle for third place could come down to the wire. The first and second place. regular season finish- ers get a bye through the first round of playoffs, while the third place regu- lar season finisher meets the regular season cellar dweller, Muscle Pit, which has failed ox oes a win through 11 g: Muscle Pit h tae ‘defaulted two games, for lack of players, and with some members getting ready to shuffle off to. university, there’s no guarantee the team will even be in exis- tence come playoff time. That would give the lucky third place regular season finisher a clear ride into the second round of playoffs, a situation not likely to be viewed too kindly by other league squads. In last Sunday's games at GDHS, league-leading Longhorns won by default over Muscle Pit, M&M Pro Sports moved into sole possession of third place with a 17-14 win over Plus Welding, while Meznic Electric moved into sole possession of fourth place with a 29-14win over sec- ond place Dawgs. Longhorns have 20 points; Dawgs have 16 points; M&M has. 12 points; Meznic has 10 points; and Plus Welding has eight points. M&M 17 Plus Welding 14 The ball-hawking Plus Welding defense collected three more interceptions - by Greg Lawr, Shayne Hillock and Jamie Frank - but without regular pivot Paul Sargent, the offense sputtered under a rusty Howie Jacobs. The game was knotted 7- 7 at the half, and a late- game field goal by M&M’s Richard Garden decided the issue. Garden added a touch- down and kicked two con- verts for a-fine 11-point effort. Horace Thomas added the other M&M major. Marcus Noel and Lawr scored the Plus Welding TDs with Daryl Weir snag- ging a two-point convert. Lawr’s interception was his: sixth of. the year, putting him two ahead of teammate Paul Martin and Mike DelGuidice of the Dawgs and Bob Davey of Longhorns. Meznic 29 Dawgs 14 Dawgs barely made it to the pre-game coin toss and the seven players who did “show up, performed dou- ble-duty throughout the contest. Mutt stalwarts were once again chasing provincial touch football laurels. Meznic led 13-8 at the half but it wasn’t until a Herb Hulme interception about halfway through the , 50 points second half, that the even- tual winners were able to put the game away. If Meznic is hoping to make some playoff noise, arrangements should be made to kidnap Gary Lockwood for a couple of weeks. Branco Krivec scored the other Meznic major, while Dale Mieczaniec booted a field goal and kicked two converts, League-scoring leader Al Pelland scored two touch- downs for the Dawgs, with Dan Reynolds corralling a two-point convert. Pelland’s two majors pushed his point total to 98. His closest challenger for the scoring title is Jim Lindsay of the Longhorns who has 66 points. Richard Garden. of M&M has 56 points, Rob Walker of Muscle Pit has and Dave Clements of the Dawgs has 46 points.
