Graphics can be added to your output through a variety of methods. Many of today’s word pro- cessing packages offer several levels of graphics capabilities. Fonts (type styles) generally have up to 255 characters in a set. In the extended set there are often symbols such as Copyright, trademarks, simple graphic symbols, and foreign character sets that can be used to make your documents more interesting. There are even complete font sets that are only symbols. Some word processors. even mimic desk-top publish- ing packages by allowing graphic compatibility with paint and drawing programs and provide some limited drawing features. Computer graphics fall into three basic groups, bitmaps, vector or structured drawings and EPS (Encapsulated Postscript). Bitmaps, as the term implies, are composed of tiny squares or pixels. To produce photo- graphic type reproduction with a computer, the bitmap is the preferred choice. Bitmaps are capable of pro- viding smooth color and toné* transitions. As I mentioned, computer bitmaps have square or rec- tangular pixels but printing devices print round dots. This is where bitmaps can present a problem. If you created a ‘simple angled line in a paint Program and sent it to-your Printer, you would have a line where the edges were “jaggy” or “stairstepped”. To overcome the “jaggies”, computer artists will fill in the open corners of the line with a series of softer toned pixels. This is referred to as dither- ing. When printed, the dithered line will appear d. Then, when you import the graphic into your output program if you scale the graphic to, say, 30 per cent of its original size, the pixels will be crammed together and the printed line will appear much smoother. While bitmapped graphics cai provide an easy solution to your graphic needs, there are a couple of problems to ~ consider, Tf you plan to use bitmaps extensively, you will proba- bly need: more RAM memory and hard storage. A simple single color bitmap may be just a few kilobytes in size but- a full color picture can occu- Py many hundred megabytes of RAM and disk space. The larger the bitmap, the greater the detail available to your printer. To print a highly detailed bitmap effectively, you will need a high resolu- tion printer and the printer must also have enough mem- ory to accept the large file size. In the next article I will dis- cuss vector and EPS graphics.
