Page'20+ Halton Hills This Week) Saturday;'September'18, 1993- Recreation CUS | and a Raiders exhibition season ends tonight By Mike Zrostek With tonight’s (Saturday) game against the Bramalea Blues being the last in the exhibition season for the Georgetown Chrysler Raiders it appears likely the team could make a major impact in the newly-formed OHA Provincial Junior A league, West Division in the upcoming 1993/94 season. Management and the coaching staff have worked hard finding new players to fill the void left by departed veterans in trying to improve the Raider squad. New players, including center Will North who has come over from the North York Canadians, should help take the pressure off Trevor Brandt and Ian Ellis in the scoring department and looks solid as a power play candidate. Another new face as an expected regular is Georgetown resident and North Bay Centennials draft pick Doug Sheppard who played four games last year with the Raiders. Sheppard has proven he can put the net. The 5°10”, 180-pound centre scored 129 points on 61 goals and. 68 assists in 69 games for the Halton Hills AAA Midget Hurricanes last season. Head coach Gary Ford is still experimenting with dif- ferent line combinations. “We will probably be shift- ing lines around for the beginning of the season with some that I set and that Jay (Anderson, Raiders assistant coach) has set. Even the power play will shift around a bit at first,” said Ford. It appears the Raiders aren’t going to have much of a problem scoring, but keep- ing the puck out of their net Bil HENDERSON 877-5165 Gerry Ford is going to take some work. In their seven exhibition games, the Raiders have scored 47 goals and allowed 51. The goals-against -statis- tic is bloated because of two blow-outs the Raiders suf- fered to Markham. One being the 14-5 exhibition opener loss and the eight- goal second period here in Georgetown a couple of weeks ago. Since then, the Raiders defense has been fairly steady while trying to learn a new system. Keys for the Raiders keep- ing the puck out will be the two new goal tenders this year, Paul Stinnett, who also came over from the North York Canadians and Nick Tan Ellis Montissano. Both have looked sharp in the pre-season and that play will need to be carried over into the regular season as neither have a lock.on the starter role. “Montissano and Stinnett - will battle from now until the beginning of the season for the number one spot, they’ve both looked good,” said Ford. The defensive core is still looking for a couple of blue liners to lend some support and hopefully tonight’s final exhibition encounter will shed some light on who gets the nod. So far, returnees Dave Milek and Kris Arro have helped bolster the Raider blue line brigade and they will be joined by Andy Pazaver, Colin Hooper, Jason Parks and newly” signed 16-year-old Sean Healy, who played in Stoney Creek last year. Ford says the Raiders are still looking for a defense- man with more experience, and some players to play on the right wing. A bigger concern for Ford than perhaps the defensive situation is the lack of disci- pline the Raiders have shown early this year, some- thing Ford won’t hesitate to ix fast. “They aren’t thinking of the team (when they take penalties) they’re just think- ing of themselves and if they don’t control themselves they'll be gone,” Ford insist- ed.
