Georgetown area residents who have been fighting the provincial NDP’s attempts to select’ a regional dump site near the Credit River may have some good news com- ing, according to a press release from the re-election team of Halton-Peel MP and federal PC candidate Garth Turner. According to the release, Turner has been having ongoing discussions with var- ious officials as-part of his efforts to prevent.the estab- lishment of a dump anywhere in the Halton-Peel riding, which as been targeted by the NDP as having five potential sites. As a result of those talks, including dialogue with David Crombie, former PC cabinet minister and now a key consultant on the dumps, “It would appear that an announcement will be made the first half of November,” Turner says, “with more sites being elimi- = Garth Turner nated at that time, but with no word on the one to be select- Editor’s note: The follow- ing press release was issued by the federal. New A few days ago, Sheila Copps said on a British Columbia television show that the 37 Liberals missed the 2nd Reading NAFTA vote because it was called so quickly, they didn’t get time for notification. Let’s look at the facts. “ Michael Wilson intro- duced NAFTA for 2nd read- ing in the House six days before the actual vote. Furthermore, 27 hours before the vote the government gave notice in the House of their intention to bring the bill to a vote. In fact, the par- ties _ 4 House had plenty of not The v vote took place on Wednesday, 31 March 1993 at 19:20 or 7:20 p.m. accord- _ ing to the of Commons Debate, Official Report. Twenty-seven hours ebefore, on Tuesday, -30 March 1993 at 16:10 or 4:30 .m., Minister Thomas Siddon rose in the House: “to give notice that an agreement could not be reached...with respect to sec- ond reading of Bill C-115, an act to implement the North American free trade agree- ment...I give notice of my intention to move a time allocation motion at the next When Siddon says an agreement could not be reached, he means the House leaders (or acting House leaders) of the Liberal and NDP parties had been con- sulted about a 2nd reading schedule and could not come to agreement. This provides more evidence the Liberals were aware of the govern- ment’s intentions to move immediately. Also, Liberal George Baker rose right after Siddon to ask a procedural question. The. Acting Speaker acknowledged that Siddon was not raising the motion before the House, but giving notice. Ironically, Baker was ise the next day for the 4 Sk days before the actual second reading vote, Minister Michael Wilson “moved that Bill C-115, an act to implement the North * American - Free Trade ment, be read the sec- ond time and referred to a legislative committee in the Departmental envelope. Liberal Trade Critic Roy MacLaren was in the House at the time of Wilson’s announcement and rose to speak about NAFTA. © When Wilson raised NAFTA, it was clear the NDP slams Liberals on NAFTA government was on the fast track. The NDP loudly and repeatedly complained the Tories were trying to ram NAFTA through as quickly as possible. The Liberals, like the NDP, had every rea- son to believe the govern- ment would move NAFTA quickly. Even more impor- tant was the notice the day before in the House, espe- cially since a leading Liberal was there to raise a proce- dural question about the notice. Parties often call their members in for an important vote from all over the coun- try with less than 24 hours notice. Though a few might have been absent legitimate- ly, nearly half the Liberal delegation was missing. The Liberal’s transparent excuses cannot hide the fact they had plenty of notice on 2nd Reading of NAFTA. So the question remains for Copps, Grey, Martin, Peterson, Ouellet,Nunziata and the. other missing Liberals that would form a Chretien cabinet: Were they lazy or simply incompetent? With any luck, citizens will have a provincial elec- tion before they are forced to have a dump.” At last week’s all-candi- dates meeting in Georgetown, Turner commit- ted himself - both as MP and citizen of Georgetown - to do all he can to defeat the provincial government, make sure there is a govern- ment at Queen’s Park which will not try and bury garbage on the shores of the Credit River.” © The release further sug- ests Turner is on record as being completely opposed to age » Saying it is no longer accept- able solution to dealing with waste. He also feels the establishment of a dump on the outskirts of Georgetown “would be completely unac- ceptable and should simply not be allowed to happen.” Turner has maintained a five-year stance against development of a dump in the Acton quarry. He has worked with community groups in Caledon to stop the establish- ment of a dump there after being asked to intervene m ago. “J will fight shoulder-to- shoulder with any citizen against any landfill BrOpos: al,” Turner says. “And I will continue to promote environ- mentally sane eo as Thave since bein; ted.” In 1989, Tamer’ eas “A Citizen’s Guide to a Better Environment,” which contained alternatives to landfill.
