PAGE 4 THE ACTON MONTHLY VOLUME I, ISSUE 9 EDITORIAL With Scott Brooks It happens to be that the lazy, hazy days of summer are now upon us, and for many that includes hitting the open road for some fun in the sun. Now while cruising behind the wheel may seem harmless, it doesn’t hurt ones self to be reminded of keeping safety in mind. Sadly, not even reaching into the height of the busy summer traffic, we have already seen a staggering amount of fatal collisions in and around the Acton area. Unfortunately, this appears to be a growing trend and one that affects all of us, as we all want to arrive to our destinations alive. While I cannot speak to the possible causes that have led to the recent collisions, I do know that we can all do our part to buck this dark trend. Some ways to make our roads safer include adhering to the speed limit, approaching all intersections with caution and coming to a com- plete stop, and not driving distracted or impaired. It can also help if you have some patience with fellow road users who may be going slower than the posted speed limit and require a bit more space, such as farmers with large pieces of slow- moving equipment. Remember, they have a job to do of feeding all of us, so please be courteous and mindful when you see them on the road, especially since summer is harvest time for many crops. Also, be sure to keep your eyes out for cyclists, motorcyclists, and children playing as they t require your utmost attention too. If we all contribute by keeping safety in mind, while out on the road, we can all enjoy a happy summer now and for many more years to come! Moo! This cow, an Angus-Holstein crossbreed, was enjoying an evening in June chewing on some grass as she peacefully roamed the pasture of the Brooks farm, on the Fifth Line just east of Acton. She comes from a long line of descendants that has been in the Brooks family since 1919.
