VOLUME |, ISSUE 12 THE ACTON MONTHLY PAGE 3 Acton hosts 43rd Annual Terry Fox Run in honour of Terry & Cancer Research The 43rd Annual Terry Fox Run was held in Acton on Sunday, September 17th, at the Acton District School track. The event started at 8:00 a.m. with an official ribbon cutting and members of the community came out throughout the day, to walk, run, or ride in support of raising funds for cancer research. This year’s campaign theme was “Dear Terry” where participants could go online, at terryfox.org, to describe how Terry’s legacy inspires them today and leave messages of hope and inspiration for Canadians touched by cancer. According to Jon Hurst of the Acton Terry Fox Run Committee, since 1981, the Acton committee has been able to raise close to $950,000, with hopes of reaching $1 million in the next year or two. In terms of support for this annual event, Hurst has a sense of pride as to how the Acton community continues to step up after all these years and carry on the torch of Terry Fox’s mission in finding a cure for cancer, after Terry could no longer continue his cross-country Marathon of Hope in 1980. “I’m so proud of this town and the residents. They've proved it over, over and over again, that when the need arises, when there’s a charitable event taking place that’s meaningful, Acton has always risen to the occasion.” In addition to fundraising pledges for the annual run, funds for the Terry Fox Foundation were raised, on site, through the sale of Terry Fox T-Shirts and a charity barbecue. wm} i.) s “The Opticians Behind the Church” Acton’s favourite eyecare provider ¢ Eye exams available on site e Adjustments, cleaning and minor repairs are always free 80 Mill Street East 519-853-5133 © actonoptical.ca
