PAGE 6 THE ACTON MONTHLY VOLUME 1, ISSUE 12 Town Council News With Ann Lawlor, Mayor of Halton Hills What does a small town mayor say when given the rare opportunity to share ideas with the Prime Minister? ering the kind of housing that is needed and we hope the national can step The pleasure (and was mine a few weeks ago (Sept 7th) when MP Adam Van Koeverden invited Councillor Jason Brass and me to his Milton constituency office to meet Prime Minister Trudeau. The PM was in the region for several stops and wanted to engage in a candid discussion about issues that matter most in our town. MP van Koeverden noted, “It’s important to hear from local leaders. They intimately know the word on the street; what action our residents need. The Prime Minister and I were ready to listen.” My comment was that the highest priority item that the federal government could help with is housing. The private market is not deliv- in. Tasked the Prime Minister and P to particularly support construction of purpose-built rental homes to accommodate seniors, singles and young families. In Halton Hills, we don’t need federal incentives to build million dollar single family dwellings. Later that day, a visit to Terra Cotta Cookies in Georgetown by Minister of Economic Development for Southern Ontario Filomina Tassi allowed Councillor Brass to discuss federal economic development initiatives. “I was a Chamber of Commerce board member, and know that Federal government support can make a real difference in our community,” said Brass. “It was a pleasure to tour the plant with our Members of Parliament. They were genuinely interested in seeing how federal small business programs could help boost production capacity and grow local industry.” As your Mayor, along with Councillor Brass, I jumped at the opportunity to bring local concerns to the federal leaders. The interests of our residents need to be known in Ottawa.
