PHONE: Will NAFTA shaft us? In reply to the above headline — and speekin’ ‘Mercan — “yur durn tootin’ it will. When the House of Representatives (Congress) of the Expiated States approved the North American Free Trade Agreement Thursday, they were also signaling to Canadians — at least those who care — that our days as a sovereign nation are numbered — maybe. You know the old Saying, ‘Give the Yanks an inch and they’! take Panama,’ So let’s all gather on street corners and practice singing the Star Bungled Banter. Or better yet, what with our ridiculous immigration policies, grant Uncle Sam landed immigrant status so all cit- izens of that nation to the south of us can Yankee their Doodle Dandy any time they want in this land of ours, often termed ‘the Frozen North,’ Disgraced former Progressive Conservative Prime Minister Brian Mulroney force-fed the Free Trade Agreement down Canadian throats and the end result was a regurgitation of jobs to the United States. Not to mention the Closing of plants and factories in Canada by their U.S.-based parent companies who were just waiting for the FTA to be signed so they could retreat south of the border and take advantage of lower wages, lax safety stan- dards, few worker benefits and the death-to-union- syndrome which permeates U.S. business practice. Baffle Baloney and his cohorts didn’t give a damn about Canadian interests or Protecting Canadian jobs, because they were warped-out by the “money-means-everything’ lack of ethics style of doing business in the Untopian States: They failed to realize — or ‘simply. didn’t care — that things are done differently in Canada. They also failed to realize that the Canadian economy — Tavaged by their own economic Policies — was in no shape to compete head-to-head with the buck-o- maniacs the other side of the 49th Parallel. And Canadians have suffered — oh, how we have suffered. - Loss of jobs, loss of Savings, loss of livelihood and in an unfortunate number of instances, the breakup of families. The Canadian economy is still in no position to compete on a level playing field with the United States — let alone the deadly combination of the U.S. and the corrupt, polluted, broke and morally- bereft Mexico — so it’s time to take a stand. When Prime Minister Jean Chretien meets with U.S. President Bubba Clinton to discuss the state of NAFTA ~ and how it will affect Canada — hope- fully, it will be a no-pucks-barred grapple. In pushing NAFTA through Congress, Clinton wheedled and deedled, made promises no self- tespecting hooker on Jarvis Street in Toronto would make to even her most debased supplicants and totally ignored Canada — or even Mexico — and what part they would play in the tripartite deal. - This was succinctly put by one of NAFTA’s staunchest supporters, Republican Jim Kolbe, who pompously declared, “ History once again knocks at our door. NAFTA Tepresents America’s opportu- nity to lead the world.” In your dreams, Kolbe. May they all be wet ones as Mexico’s polluted rivers vomit their filth into the good old U.S. of A. In his election campaign Chretien vowed to teview NAFTA, Specifically because of four issues. He wants to obtain a subsidies code; an anti- dumping code; a more effective way to resolve dis- putes and protection of our energy resources. A word to the wise Jean! Wrap the leadership mantle around your shoul- ders when you meet with the hog from Arkansas. Stand up for Canada’s rights and it’s best interests. The people will back you up. Colin Gibson To the Editor: Lest we forget, one of the evils of Hitler and his support- ers is their misinterpretation of Darwinian Evolution. For them it produced ‘superior Taces’, rather than simply new species! Murray Russell, in his letter National Party Supporter (HHTW 13Nov93), adopts the same errors under the euphemisms of ‘phylogen- esis’ (not speciation) and “Teilhardian’ futurism, and attempts to apply them to Russell plainly states that under evolution “a superior form evolves that eventually Comes to dominate the niche”. He precedes this remark with a very non-professional dis- Cussion of animal evolution. He is not discussing one body of political ideas gaining a wider acceptance over oth- ers. He is discussing the evo- lution of human races but, before he makes this too plain, he provides a diversion. He quickly drops his line of reasoning by Claiming his allegiance to the Jesuit priest Pierre Teilhard de Chardin (1881-1955) and proceeds on another tack. Teilhard in no way pro- vides Russell with moral shel- ter. Hitler’s social Darwinism was strongly influenced by the false individualism of Neitsche. Neitsche held that all men would one day find themselves led by an 4 10 be physically, intellectually and spiritually supreme. As he promised; the helicopter deal has been canceled. Joe Hurst Acton A frustrated shopper To the Editor: Tam a resident of Acton and I am wondering if any- one else has the same prob- lems as myself with store sale advertising. Every week I am bom- barded with newspapers and flyers. Since we have a fami- ly of four small children, shopping and Christmas shopping can become very expensive. Therefore I take the time to look through all the papers and flyers for sales every week. Trying to start my Christmas shopping early. this past month I have made trips to G t th have visited Zellers three times, Consumers three times and Woolco twice and was not able to purchase any of the items that were on sale for that week. Why do these stores have the right to continue what I feel is false advertising and waste my time and gas? Thave received rain checks and promises of a phone call when items come in and then never receive a call. I work im my home and can be reachéd-anytime, but this is beside the point. Why should I be expected to make countless trips to for items that Bi on the first day of the sale to find the items on sales are not in stock or not in the sizes advertised. * In the past two weeks I were not in stock on the week of the advertised sale? Am 1 alone on this? Sandra Faber Acton IER: Ken Bellamy ER: Jean Shewell EDITOR: The People’s Corner Real freedom is diffi do this they would have to abandon their individuality to this Oberman. Like the Nazi’s Teilhard blended evolutionary theory and, in his case, theological, philosophy into a modified Socialist utopian view: man is evolving mentally and social- ly towards a perfect Spiritual state. Though not explicit, his God would be his Oberman. Hitler, who for many Nazis was the Oberman, was also Pursuing the perfect society as an avowed, elected socialist. He could not have achieved the destruction he did without Supporters who accepted his appalling ideas as being rea- sonable! If ever established in politics, Teilhard’s equally warped views provide a re Carpet for Nazi thugs and their ilk to act in Hitler’s place. Ideas such as Russéll’s must be’ destroyed on sight! At the same time, men should never be compelled to act against their will so long as they act with respect to life, liberty and Property, Colin Gibson CIRCULATION MANAGER: Marie Shadbolt HALTON HILLS THIS WEEK IS INDEPENDENTLY OWNED & OPERATED. : 873-2254 FAX: cult to understand In a society where freedom is properly understood Mr, Russell ‘may voice his ideas safely, but the ideas will never gain the popular political force that would result in their being acted out! Too few would listen. For those who understand WW2, seeing Russell’s ideas in print should be terrifying at any time, but they are an extreme obscenity when pre- sented in the same week as Remembrance Day. Sadly too many have for- gotten, or perhaps never understood, why so many of our boys died in WW2. Freedom is an idea that is not easy to . If you have not understand it, you will not see it dwindle until it is gone. Too much of Remembrance Day ceremony focuses on dead soldiers, t0o little focus- €s on the ideas that produced the enemy that killed those soldiers. R. Bramwell. Milton To the Editor: T would'like to take this Opportunity to thank Halton Hills This Week for the Support which your news- Paper gave towards the opposing of the proposed Peel landfill sites situated close to the Halton border. Thanks must also be given to the Halton Hills Council, the Region of Halton, those citizens who wrote letters and all those who helped and showed their opposition to a landfill which would be situated close to the Credit River and the Town of Halton Hills, Finally we were heard and the IWA came to real- ize that the three sites B15b, B22D and B2Ic were unsuitable. It is unfortunate that before naming these potential sites they did not tead the results of the Peel landfill research, which took place in the 80’s. They would have seen that these sites were Teject- ed then for hydrogeological Teasons too and the people of this area could have been spared the worry, time and expense which have had to endure in order to oppose these sites. But there is a brighter side to this story. The IWA’s selection of these Thanks for support sites brought our communi- ty closer together as wey fought the common enemy. We made new friends and the people of Halton and Peel ignored Political boundaries and worked as a single group. We also learned much about the Credit River and the ESAs of the Norval area. We came to appreciate more than before that we are indeed fortunate to have So close to us an area which is very rich in natural beau- t y. As we celebrate the won- derful news that there will be no landfill close to Norval ‘we cannot help but feel sorry for the people of Caledon who live in the area of the chosen site. We know only too well the ‘hard work and sleepless nights which lay ahead for them. This miserable experi- ence of the last 17 months has made me look twice at every piece of garbage which I create. To me it now means not only a con> tribution to the pollution of the environment but loss.of farmland and the homes of other people. Thank you once again. Pamela Soward. Georgetown.
