ditectore of eeqnebiog agrioaltortu society published in the emb pbsss ft ooople 61 weeks ago revealed the fact that notwith standing actons jttait and reasonable claims to the annual exhibition this year t geotrgejtown waa again favored and the fair wijlbe held then this fall as nbnal some of the directors contended that in justice to the two places and to theagricul- torists resident in the sections of the town- shig of which they are the two centres the exhibition should be annually alternated between acton and georgetown but to this proposal the representatives of the latter place would nqt listen their town must have the lions share of this as well as other attractive agencies from the general tenor of things con nected with this subject we are convinced that influence will continue to be brought to bear upon the matter by the people of georgetown of sufficient weight to preclude theprobabihty of acton ever beingdealt with at all equitably efforts in her behalf will be cprnpafatively fruitless for the expert hoe of the future would no doubt be simi lar to that of the past in forty years acton has only succeeded in wresting the exhibition from the possession of her covet ous neighbor upon three occasions each of which were by the way characterized with marked success and tended very materially to revive the lagging interest in the societys welfare to an appreciable de gree considering the above there is no encouragement to make further effort in this direction and the only satisfactory coutjse open to this community is to pro ceed to effect the organization of a union society embracing portions of the four townships of which acton will form a most convenient centre the agriculturists andoheri within this radius of territory are anxious for such an action for it in cludes sections of all the tqwnships whose residents are too far away from their town ship exhibition to allow thebi to take any thing like an active interest therein it only remains for those mot directly inter ested in the matter to move systematically and a most successful organization will resnjlt acton is an attractive and desirable point for such a society here are to be found all jjhe facilities and accommodations ne cessary we have just as large and cm- modions buildings for the purpose as fare v offered by any township society and our driving park of fifteen acres with a proper- ly graded halfmile track is acknowledged even by competitors to besuperior to any thing found outside the cities and large tawns then too tb people both in and i oat of acton are noted for tiibir enterprise inthis matter this was most manifestly apparent in the fall of 1883 when the township fair was last held here on this occasion the president of the society in forms us the receipts handed over to the societys treasurer amounted to over 8100 more than had ever been received at the fair when held in georgetown up to that date thereis therefore no plausable reason why a successful society should not at once be organized and even if the usual gov- eminent grant is not obtainable the people j may rest satisfied that sufficient practical 1 interest will be centred in the project to guarantee ample funds to enable the officers of the new society to offer an attractiveprize list and to meetall reasonable expenses tiieba f book lake whioh mwjked the openii it of the rebellion in the north weditoasbhvyer aip today jfort garletou iisbttrnedoi the 86th of march the 90th bjattalion left winnipeg on the 87th and thb queens own and grenadiers lefttojobw on tho aotu r laok of enthusiasm the strongest reason given in its behalf was that the medals had been asked for by tho canadian government and the ref jisal of them would be open to misconstruction iu canada canada put down her own rebellion herself and would doubtless hjivepaid for the medals herself had not herj government naturally believed that a royal medal would be a much more valued honbr and that it would give to the imperial government a very speoial pleasuro to have aii opportunity to give suoli forma expression to the unity of the empire itnts says the jberlih news mr pearco tho popular and efficient inspector of the schools of t aia county lias commenced to examine the scholars in the different schools on i heir knowledge of the current events of tlie day he keeps a atrict ao- count of the answers received and in his reports tokos this in as one of the con siderations in t making out the status for each school teachers can very materially aid in bringing up their scholars to have both a desire for and knowledge of those subjects a few minutes spent each day by the teaaher in explaining any circum stance or eint of note will go very far in adding tothe general intelligence of the pupil it will also cultivate in them a taste and desire for suoli information as is found in the newspapers thus enabling the scholars by reading to increase their know ledge on su h subjects the refo mer says the contract for the county priutiug has been awarded to tho reformer and this fact appears to have thrown the acton free peess into hot water our genial cotem complains that the reformer office docs printing too cheaply the reformer is quite competent to take care of itself and would respectfully remind its contemporary that its dictation iu matters of business will not be allowed we sincerely hope our cotem will be able to successfully take care of itself but viewing some of its actions in the four months of its existence m the light afford ed by an eight or ten years of practical ex perience we are led to conclude that a little fatherly advice would be quite apro pos in the words of an exchange we have heard of men trying tomabe a living bj going behind a stump and whistling for chipmunks and really the chances for suc cess in such a case are on the whole even better than tha of the reformer man in the county printing contract at any rate the outlay bf the chipmunk man would not joe quite such- a serious consideration which makes all the difference in the world with the printer i v notes and comments the ontario legislature will likely be prorogued within a week the view largely prevails that very shortly after the rising of parliament the dominion- general election will be held- new the british war office is considering seriously a plan for that establishment of an agency for the regular purchase of cavalry horses in canada for jjse in the british army england paid twenty million pounds to the owners of slaves to secure their emanci- exhibition to be one of the most interesting of inter national fairs canada in the foregeotjnd the interest taken by the ople 0 canada and the other british colonies in colonial and indian exhibition to be held this year in london en has beea pheno menal in the history of international fairs anditis expected to prove the greatest and most instructive exhibition the world has ever seen j it will be opened in- may by the prince of wales whois president and will continue for six months it will be the greatest opportunity ever presented to lay a picture of canada before the world this is being done -in- many ways by hundreds of corpjorations of the various cities towns villages and rural districts as well as by merchants and manufacturers in every province of the dominion i to provide an affective chattel through which information may bedisseminated in great britain and the colonies regarding local interestsof all classes it has been decided to publish a journal for the cana dian department of the exhibition this journal will be called the canadian exhibi tor and will be in itself an interesting fea ture of the exhibition as it will be entirely a canadian product it will he printed on canadianjnade paper with canadian cink from canadian type and on a canadian press one being now in course of construe tion especially for the work and it will be edited and published by canadians- the engravings with which it will be illustrat ed will also be almost exclusively canadian products the canadian exlubudr will enable any town or locality to present its local features before the orld and especially before the english people whether for the purpose of inviting tourists introducing immigrants or inducing manufacturers to establish here or to further our exports of- develop international trade in view of this it would be a matter of much satisfaction to us and we believe to our citizens generally to have acton and her attractions occupy a place in thej columns of
