us though that was wiser than eloping even though he got her at last just think of the precious years that wasted young men if yoa have got to work first work hard and you will not lave to wait so long besides dwor never u the motto of girls nowaday tiie klvgs uttle joke in this age of travel tnd journalism ac count 1 of trips to the west and other point are very plentiful yetjt may be that an other attempt in that direction will not be wholly without interest leaving toronto by the c p r steam- ahipexpress at eleven oclock in tbe fore noon of july the 10th we were in three boars hustled aroaad the many curves of the line between that city and the town of owen sound the companys steamer aluria was at the dock awaiting our arrival aud in a very short time passengers and baggage were on board and we moved out of the harbor while many are anx ioaaly looking after berths etc a few are taking a parting look at the town snugly nestling by the bay which is indeed a pretty sight as the town fades in the dis tance more attention ia turned upon the easel and her equipments she is a beau tifully built steamer 270 feet long of 2000 tons burthen and fitted with every appli ance for comfort and ease being lighted throughout by electric light and her saloon well provided with sofas chairs and tables and having also a piano for those who are musically inclined the chief attraction below is the engines which are kept as the saying is in applepie order being beau tifully bright and their working held tbe attention of many by the hoar daring the afternoon the shore of the brace peninsula was plainly discernible on our left and the neat looking little houses here and there upon it added to the beauty of the scene rounding cabots bead we were soon upou tbe waters of lake haron with mspiloulin island on the right but as light was draw ing ou we could not sec anything of it save the warning light from its lighthouses we reached sault gte maria at noon ou thurs day and were surprised at the size and beauty of ihe two towns ooe on each side o the river paasiag through the locks we were soon upon the cool waters of lake superior and next moraine passing thnn- der cape which looms up almost perpen dicularly to the height of 1300 feet and silverislet in the distance from thander bay we had a fine new of port arthur and fort william we left the steamer at eleven oclock not at all overjoyed that the lake trip war ended for the steamer waa dean cool and comfortable and we were provided with first class meals having an hoar or two before train time we had a look around the town and were pleased with its cleanliness and air of basi oesfi prosperity the country about the port will probably be developed as a mining section more than agriculturally resum- ing our journey westward by train a few minutes travel btoaght us to fort william with its two immense elevators having a combined capacity of two and a quarter millions of bashels ooe of which ranks among the largest elevators in the world the railway from here for scores of miles is through a low rough country apparently not much good but in some parts exceed ingly picturesque and as we neared rat- portage was thickly dotted with small lakes pretty streams aud large boalderi ot rocks near the station of savanne we saw the remains of two or three of the boats used by wouiley in his expedition of 1670 the road throagh this part of the coantry is rather winding oa account of the broken and rocky surface crossing the red river by a large iron bridge we reached winnipeg aboat noon on saturday and found ourselves in a lively bustling city with good street car service flue substantial public and commercial baildings and all tbe modern improvements in ihe way ot lighting water supplies roads etc the city hall and post office were particularly noticeable in the heart of the city while a little farther away were several fine churches and many splendid residences one remarkable feat are of the city is its many vacant lots held we sup pose by speculators and utilized by the rising generation as a grounds on which td play cricket lacrossebaseball or football in all of which they claim to excel the crop prospeci for some distance on both sides of winnipeg as seen from the railway was exceedingly poor oats being bat a few inches high and in fact no good crops were to be seen until nearing portage la prairie although reports indicate a bet ter prospect in southern manitoba we left winnipeg at 130 continuing on the main line ot the c j3 and for forty or fifty miles the country is somewhat thinly settled owing to much of the land being held by speculators bat nearing the thriving town o portage la prairie every thing seems gradually yet magically to brighten crops are good we might say excellent in spile of the drought settlers housesare seen oo almost every farm many of which are fenced and everything wears an air of solid agricultural and commercial progress then for fifty to seventyfive mil we pu throagh as almost oubrokeft belt of good farming land with here and there a bluff until we reach iloosomin where bluffs seem to predominate oyct open prairie in this seventyfive miles we have passed many a flourishing little town and village such as brandon oak lake virden and elkhorn all of which are rapidly le- comiog centres of grain production and trade the coantry from hereon tofiegina a distance of about one hundred miles is not thickly settled and aa we passed throagh during the night both going and coming we could not form an opinion as to the nature or capabilities of the soil we arrived at moose jaw a distance of 821 milea from port arihnr or 400 miles from winnipeg aiusoonsundaymoraing- and here oor locomotion by the iron horse was exchanged for the somewhat slower movement of the bony ox leaving moose jaw on tuesday afternoon july 16th in the company of two settlers from away back we started ou the trail for saska toon a distance of 154 miles north west for a distance of 20 miles widely separated booses were seen some occupied by families a swedish statesman recently- inveighed most eloquently ia parliament against oleo margarine next eveniog ho wa invited fo dine with the king who loves a jokej there was only oleomargarine on the royal table and the statesmen liberally took thereof at the close of the meal the king asked him pre horse teams and the ox teat were all heavily loaded having au average of 2700 lbs each and more than that being well provided for in the way of provisions aad- water cant and having a teat over one of the wagons for dy sleeping we were not in any particular rush arrived at beaver creek at g oclock on saturday evening we camped for tbe sabbath in sight of mr wusoo b sod house the oply human sociability amply manilesting that enviable characteristic but wehlve yet another experience in store for usi the novelty uf crossing the river which here is about ooe thousand feet wide on a scowj the working of which may be worthy of description two of the lcam3 with their loads are driven oil to the scow the driveway or apron is raised and wears ready to start aheivy wtrecablestretchs across tbe river and to it tbe scow is at tached being held by a rope which passes from one end of the scow through two pulleys these being kept apart by a light piece of limber which is in turn held to the cable by another pair of pulleys and the rope ia attached to the other end tbe scow ii then turned by the shortening of one end o the rope and consequent lengthening of the other end to that the broadside is at an angle otabonl forty degrees to the current and tbe force of the carrent drives it across after spending two weeks very pleasantly with the family dt mr henry smith for- merly of gorrie we again start on the trail and thu time having no bad we break the monotony of the journey by going through a saalt indian reserve which is eighteen miles from saskatoon arriving there about four oclock we see tbe indian chil dren to the number of aboat twenty issuing from the school bouse which is a new clean comfortable logbuudiog and in a few seconds nothing is to be seen of them bat a few heads looking at us from the adjacent clump of buihesj th6 school and reserve are under the able management of mr tucker an ontario man of sterling worth who has gone there not forworldly emolu meat bat to do tbe red man good and he is now learning the language of the tribe to enable him to telltheni ol jesos the mighty to save and his position is a dimcnlt one as the indians have pot much faith in the white man qn account of former dealings with cnscrupalous christians most of the people hve in comfortable looking log houses though a few smoke stained wig wams were to be seen pushing on from here we reach moose jaw in rather less than three and onehalf days travelling the ony thing worthy of note being a hay slough the only ore seen in which the hay answers to the description of bryant as oer the verdant waste i guide my steed amongthe high rani grot that sweeps his side and near ft a lake upon which a score of ducas gracefully floated iiavtngl moose jaw at 530 on saturday morning we pass through im mense tracts of land devoid of settlers yet bearing marks cf greak fertility and on the other hand we see much that is strongly impregnated with alkali hut as we are nearing the foothills of the mosotaini we are also nearing the shades of night and are thus prevented from seeing the great grazing portion of our canadian north west with its hundreds of cattle and horses j after a ride of poo miles we are at banff and at once proceed to hotel where ere longve have the pleasure ot a bath in the hot water of the solphur springs banff is in tbe heart of the canadian national park and though as yet hut a hamlet on accpanl of its location and beauty it bid3 fair to rival som of the older and more renowned summer resorts it is hemmed in oa almost every side by mountains one of which is about a mile and a quarter high and through the village runs the beautiful bow river spanned by a splendid iron bridge aiaar a clamber over tunnel mountain and a very pleasant canoeride on the bow river we took a drive oat to the devils canjjon where the witer of a creek passes throagh a channel varying from twenty tj birty feet wide the rock oo either side being perpendicilar and rising on an average thirty feet above tbe water it beiog somewhat smoky during our stay the beauty of the mountain views was much obscurcdi obe point we had nearly forgotten to the coal mines at anthracite a village six miles from banff these mines were started aboat three years ago and though considerable coal has been found tbey are still developing them tbe first mine is worked on the level back into the mountain where tbe coal is in seams varying from two to five feet in thickness arid is found lying in a- slanting position between the strata of rock the second is a
