ontario may 13 1932 the old man in the big clock tower the acton free press v acton ontario dear sir i was very interested in your article of may 12 describing the first town meeting in esqueslng i am interested in the early town meetings and particu larly interested in esquesing as i re ceived my public school education at a b no 10 i wonder if you could fall me where the account is that describes the meeting i heres an item of 1875 that will make some of the agriculturists of today wonder if the depression of 1932 is really so bad- esqueslng is one of the finest townships of the- province many of the farmers are wealthy and the township wears an air of thrift and prosperity it is studded over with handsome resid ences and has some very fine churches among which the most notable aire the presbyterian and antiburgher churches in the scotch block and the methodist and episcopal churches at hornby theres just a thought that came- to me as i read that the wealth of the township was portrayed by its homes and churches that was a great foundation for the pioneer stock of the country the population of the township ex elusive of acton and georgetown was supposed to be about 6000 wef dont know whre all the people have gone to in the past fifty or sixty years as- at the present population is under 4000 the total assessment of real and per sonal property for 1876 was 1337609 upon which a rate of five mills on the dollar was levied for all purposes except ing school and railway rates xn 1930 the total assessment of esquesing township was 2360386 and the municipal rate was 29 mills and 81 mills for schools in 1877 the esqueslng agricultural societyttad250 members andthe year previously had distributed nearly7600- ln prizes the officers for 1876 were j b bessey president george tolton- vicepresident and john murray had held the oiffce of secretarytreasurer for 22 years the following were esquesing town ship reeves from 1850 to 1s76 john mcnaughton 1850 james young 1851 to 1856 john mcnaughton 185758 william barber 1859 william clay 18601866 john mcnaughton 18671870 william clay 1871 to 1876 there now ive finished with esques lng township from this source and next week well go on to nassagaweya town ship i notice that ebenezer church out there is 100 years old this year and the good folk out there are observing this event in june no doubt therehbe many of is the one toilet requisite for the exacting woman peerless as a bcautifler should we spray our potatoes7 v one must spray his potatoes if ne wants to grow them with profit spray ing is recommended for two main rea sons 1st it ls a protection to the crop when early and thorough applications of fungicides are made and continued regu larly during the growing season plants are protected against the attacks of fungi and the depredations of insects several growers have objected that such protec tion could not be realized but after in quiring upon their method of preparing bordeaux mixture the time they started spraying the nu and thoroughness of fungicidal applications they realized they had faulted in one or more of these points spraying when dtme properly s a protection to the crop 2nd it -favors- the development of potato plants and thereby assures a larg er crop in certain teglpns where dis eases that can be controlled by fungi cides particularly late blight make their appearance only once in several years growers do not go to the trouble of spray ing according to them the risk is worth experiments carried on for several years while taking to these may we saythat at the dominion laboratory of plant pathology at ste anne de la pocatiere show that during blightfree years pota to plots that were sprayed regularly throughout the season showed consider able increase in yield over those plots that were not sprayed and it would-sem- advlsable that growers in these regions should spray a few times to ensurea larger yield and protect their potato fields against sudden persian balm creates and preserves lovely and youthful complexions tones and stimulates the skin fragrant as a flower cool as morning dew swiftly absorbed bythetlssuesrmakingtheskinlaiiotrtng the principal growth to take buckwheat while ajj important farm crop is frequently grown as an after thought requiring only from ten to twelve weeks to mature seeding may be done during an- otherwise more or less idle season of the summer it is one of the most successful poor land crops prospering relatively well on poor and acid soils it responds readily however to good treatment light welldrained soils are well suited to this crop an excess of nitrogen may produce too much straw and cause lodging it-also- seems practically immune to insect and plant disease pests buckwheat does best where the climate is cool and moist at blooming time it is very sensitive to high temperatures and to dry weather under such con ditions many flowers then in bloom may be blasted and produce no grain to avoid this as much as possible sowing is delayed untihate in june or early july place in warm weather and the forma tion of seed when the temperature is lkely to be a little lower as a farm crop buckwheat often proves relatively profitable buckwheat flour is used extensively for making griddle cakes the grain makes excellent poul try feed the straw is sometimes used as feed when well preserved it should not be used as a bedding for hogs since the straw contains a large amount of mineral matter ana rots quickly it makes gopdj manure as a crop buckwheat ap pears able to utilize better than do the cereal crops the relatively insoluble mineral constituents of the soli as a soil renovator buckwheat when ploughed under has a distinct- value it-may-also- be used as a nurse crop with sweet clover the latter adding tothe feeding value of the straw mixing with other cereals such as barley may be useful the buckwheat tending to keep the barley from lodging and the barley assisting at harvest- time in allowing the straw to dry out more quickly produclng many flowers well supplied with nectar over a period of a month at least buckwheat is an excellent source of honey for bees quick germination and rapid growth make buckwheat ideal as a weed destroy er two crops of buqkwheat during the one year usually prove effective- in eradicating even sow thistle and quack grass the first crop should be seeded early in may ploughed before blossoming begins and worked for a ten day period and reseeded to buckwheat asking questions people sometimes get impatient with children for asking
