operated a plant manufacturing knitting machines at geor ontario one of the earliest autumn wheat in ontario most of the autumn wheat grown in canada is confined to the province of ontario and chiefly to the southwestern part its popularity in thutarea is due principally to its ability to survive the winters and to yield considerably better on the average than spring wheat on tario grown autmun wheat generally speaking produces a type of flour which appears particularly well suited to the biscuits cake and pastry trade and is used quite extensively for this purpose the growing of ffiis crop fits in well irlui the rotations usually practised in the province and by being sown in the early- fall and harvested shortly after the hay crop it aids in the distribution of labor furthermore it is a cash crop which normally yields relatively good net returns autumn wheat responds to good hus bandry and the farmer who carefully prepares his seedbed practises good fer tility methods either through his rota tions or by the application of fertilizers and who sows only the best seed of approved varieties is likely to be greatly tepald by increased yields it should be kept in mind that the hazard from winterkilling is greatly reduced when autumn wheat is sown on welldrained land and especially on land which is inclined to be rolling the formation of fee in low spots during the winter months or early bpring often results in considerable loss and if such areas do occur light top dressing with strawy manure applied just before freezeup should be of considerable bene fit the most productive varieties and those which have given the best satis faction in ontario belong to the soft white winter wheats of which dawsons golden chaff and o a c 104 arejjhe most widely grown both of these varues are quite hardy and even in eastern ontario it would appear frdm tests conducted by the cereal division dominion experimental farm at ottawa on more than one hundred of the best known winter wheat varieties in the world that they would give the best general satisfaction lay your plans ntaiw for yourfall wheat crop for next year choose the field which best suits your rotation and pre ferably one which provides good surface drainage secure good seed of approved varieties and treat if necessary lor bunt have a well prepared seedbed of good fertility for sowing at the best dates the latter are dependent on locality but in general are between the last week in august and the end of the second week in september for localities as far south as essex and kent counties good results almost have started a bake shop with the lovely cakes which vthey brought and the candies why we fcould havefeuilta castle of- it h tiy acton collected hits in every inning but the fourth seventh and league were still going it is likely some exhibition games will be played this is about the first year acton has been in the playoffs in ten years and they have had a most successful season it will be noticed in the box score that houston the milton third baseman didnt have a ball to handle in the whole game having no putouts assists or errors ittakestwo tomakeachurcipl it takes twotft make a bargain is an old seeing that is quite true also it is true that it takes the united efforts of pew and ipulplt to make a wideawake church spurgeon was once asked by a puijl j some of you young people take a very ritor attitude in regard to pull disdain lti you say and the ieel- ls8doeasiojcredlt tnat you want to succeed on your own merits or not at oll some young men have even gone so far as to take a name not their own when storting out in business because they did not want the advantage their fathers name would have given them while people must admire that independent spirit it is after all carry ing a good thing a little too far the good word of a teacher or a pastor may be of untold benefit to you the fact that you are the son of a man known for uprightness and ability may be of great advantage when you are making your start it is a reiny to ignore these aids because all of you peed all the help you can get a greater mistake however is to depend uponj them to suppose that a recommend ation or an honored name will take the place of enthusiasm for your work and devotion to it h you have a pull use it but work as hard as though you had nothing but your own efforts to recommend you economy could have lived on it for a year and a day thats an exaggeration of course and didnt we enjoy it all but this year captain has ordered that no candy be brought to camp if visit ors wish to donate anything she prefers that it be fruit or vegetables all food must be handed into the quartermaster there the important business ot the meeting is over were too busy to write more now but youll be hearing from us in a week until then youll know were all preparing for camp good reason caller wouldnt you walk as far as the street car with me tommy age seven i cant why not cause were gonna have dinner as soon as you go h ere an dtn ere lord nigel douglashamilton in charge of a party of thirtyf bngllsh public school boys who jwlllarrivein montreal august 5 under his supervision claims that there is no better finishing school than a tour ot this na ture vacant church to sendthemaminlsteirj who would fill the house he replied that he did not know of any such min ister that it was all any preacher could do to fill the pulpit this is the true relation very often you hear some church say through its committee appointed to select a pastor we need a man who can enter into their pleasures play their games and be friends with them in the high and proper sense there can be no objec tion to this except that it puts far too much of the responsibility on the preacher if you want to make your preacher popular fill the church for him it hard and discouraging work to preach to empty pews your enthusiasm will fill his heart with joy and his mind with thoughts that will be helpful after jesus had talked with the woman of samaria she ran into the city and cried come see a man which told me all things that ever i did that was the way to win an audience for the master and the result was that many in that city were saved if your church is not all that it should be take hold of it young people young faces in the pews young voices in song young enthusiasm fat invitation have- rescued many a church that seemed to be dead alfalfaensilage full bloom appears to be the best time to cut alfalfa for ensilage is the con clusion advanced by the division of field husbandry or the dominion ex perimental farms as a result of special studies made in this connection wilting alfalfa for five hcurs improves the quality of the ensilage and is re commended for this crop the addition of 25 per cent of timothy to alfalfa seems to improve its quality as ensilage while a mixture of com and alfalfa produces an excellent ensilage the addltln of molasses at the rate of 2 to 4 per cent and crude sugar at the rate of 1 to 2 per cent improves the quality of alfalfa ensilage the addition of salt does- not appear to improve the quality of alfalfa ensilage while the addition of lime resulted in such a poor quality of ensilage that the cows did not eat it alfalfa cut in full bloom and placed in the silo without cutting produces a rotted material which is not
