chiming and im longing for the dear old home again the other day i was talking to the editor of the free press and he told me place ope stone bore the date of 1832 and othersshowed that the persons had comeout from the old land m the early eighties and settled bere they carved out the beginnings for this community and laid well the foundations of aoton i imagine it was to prevent such an- other happening that the present fair- view cemetery was put into a condition whereby care for all the plots would be maintained it is just fine that such a move has been made but it is too bad such ah example as the pioneers ceme tery must also remain to urge us on to the care of the graves of departedones 1 could go on and name the pioneers whose graves are marked in this spot but i understand nelson moore is making a record of itlhe plots and graves and this is certainly very pralsewortjhy i admit you teaily have to see the pioneers cemetery to get- an idea of its condition maybe the fine condition if falrview now makes this other spot seem worse too- what can be done about this place has been a question for many years every once in a while a movement is made to start some improvement be cause it is nokxontdnuous the work that is done aftera few years has all gone jfov naught and been wasted effort i looked out over the green expanse of actons park as i left this plot where actons- pioneers were resting memory carried me back just a few short years to when it was little more than a hay- fleld what had made the difference a level ground and o lawhmower drawn by a horse had been largely responsible but a horsedrawn lawfi inower could not operate in the cemetery as it now stands one operated by men would require the constant supervision of one man a good deal of time after the place was first put into condition piecing the two thoughts together it seemed to me to be the logical thing to level off the ground all the stones would need to be gathered into one spot in the centre and buuttotoonfclargeftffalr no lehntthey could be read and deciphered then the ground could be maintained in decent shape with the same mower that oper ates so successfully in the park the identity of the individual graves would be lost the record and plan of the old cemetery should be made end preserved before this was done dese cration some will say of a hallowed spot i i say that the present condition is worse than desecration after a view of acton pioneers cemetery tt1 never be able to sing o canada with the same vim until the place is fixed up and i think there are more that will have some of the words stick in their throat if they let their mind wander back to this neglected ground where canadian fore bears remains have gone back to the earth there now ive filled my dumb that i didnt understand what he meant i hadnt seen the old cemetery for some years and there is little improvement there the pastfewyears7 1 wlllassure you i wandered i in back of the arena and got around the end of the fence where the big willow tree used to be and spent an hour or so in this forgotten spot t later in a tide along maui street i noticed that two signs have been erecfed pointing the way to acton pioneers cemetery in the right of way continu ing river street to this spot there used to be a big high board fence all around the cemetery and a big wooden gate af- thls entrance patches of the fence remain but the only respectable bit of fence is along the back of the arena and it appears of recent wire construc tion here and tjiere is the odd plot that has received some care from those who remember like an oasis in the desert these bifs of cut grass and readable marble slabs stand out i dont recollect that theoejneteryjvaa first called thi pioneers cemetery but whoever gave it this name was very apt in putting the matter in a few words here is the resting place of the earthly remains of the adams family prom out among a thickness of shrubbery and undergrowth that cannot be penetrated can be seen the stone that marks the grave of zenas adams no doubt other marble slabs are buried under this growth all along the main street side of the cemetery 4s a dense growth that almost stops the search for graves with out the use of an axe the place has apparently too been used to some extent as a dumping ground lor piles of tin cans and rubbish are along the place where the fence once enclosed the ceme tery the knox streef side is little better in appearance and almost forbids any effort to learn of the graves hat are there about the centre of the cemetery is the grave or robert swan actons first post master and tlie man who named this community a weather beaten marble slab gives the details of his birth and death the surroundings ore mat as they should be to honor the memory or actons pioneers along the river street side the old wooden fence has plmost all disappear ed the view is of nothing- but the swale that clutters the stream joining fairy lake and corporation pond it is not an impressive sight to say the least the stretch back of the arena has been levelled off at some time here and there arc plots hat give some evidence of attention but in such a wilderness we can imagine anyone feel ing what is the use actons pioneers i yes every grave la a pioneers resting just felt it was my duty to call this to the attention of my readers after i had had my attention called to it i have tried not to be personal in anything i have said because i dont believe the responsibility is a personal one we all owe a little bit surely to these pioneers and whatever move is made toward im provement let us all try to be helpful a not a hindrance slats diary by bobs parqohab friday eb martins dauter dont eat enuff to keep a burd alive extraordinary ways of extracting metals from the body of this world of curs is that to be seen in the tin mines of the malay states with the exception of precious metals such as gold silver platinum and radium tin is pow the most valuable in the world often the tinbearing ground rises cliff- like from the plain mining is then car ried on not by orthodox methods but with the help of a superhose pipe this hose throws a thin jet of water at a pressure of more than 200 pounds to the square inch until one has seen such a jet it is almost impossible to realize what it is like the strongest man for instance could not cut through the jet near the nozzle of a hose with a heavy sword if he tried a broken blade and probably a brcken arm would result the jet is directed against the face of the cliff which crumbles away almost as though it had been blown up by dynamite the gentleman in charge of the safe deposit vault showed me how to open the little compartments containing the tin boxes with the valuables of the depositors it takes two keys to open each com partment he explained the guard key and the depositors key neither the guard key alone nor the depositors key alone can open the lock the first turn is made by the guard key and the last turn toy the depositors key then with- outanytragicats6sametthe interesting very interesting not only to locksmiths depositors bank presidents and the public in general but also to me and i pondered on there are two keys to success one is in yourpossession your dihgence per severance and thrift will go far toward opening the lock to the treasure chamber of success but another key is neces sary the key that represents the power that rules the universe if you only depend upon your own will and power the results of your efforts will give you thrills but not satisfaction you must work in harmony with the almighty to achieve true success your key must cooperate with gods key when your will is attuned- to gods will you are bound to be a success no matter how much the world may rate you as a failure ora et labora is an old latin proverb meaning pray and work not work alone nor prayer alone but prayer and work work alonei without god makes us selfish in greed and pride and prayer alone ends in religious sentimen tality prayer and work are the two keys dangerous companions there are some people whose mission in life seems to be to throw cold water whatever is suggested they have an objection to offer they oan always see insuperable d in the way at any undertaking they advise other people to be careful to think a long time before attempting bhav which they have in mind they shake their heads if a friend is indiscreet enough to confide til them his secret ambition other people ore born encouragers they take the hopeful view when you talk with them you find your selfcon fidence mysteriously re that hopeless feeling is replaced by power arid determination the people who throw cold water may have many excellent traits but they are dangerous companions just the same you cannot afford to associate with those who weaken your selfconfidence bigger and better expert viewing the newrich acres yes ybu can have a splendid
