politics seems to be a game of inducing the voters to believe that the other side is at fault for all the ills with which mankind is beset in south huron there was a byeelection staged and the other morning we find the man fit brtiptrebemoaning the fact that the liberal leader is not exonerating mr bennett from all the blame of the present ills a few years ago in a dominion election we found mr bennett and the mail empire doing just what mr king is doing today but mr bennett at that time agreed to cure all these ills most everyone knew that he couldnt but he was given a chance so far the cycle of time has not been long enough for mr bennett to take full credit for a complete re covery he has worked hard and devoted a great deal of energy to the task but the five year plan hasnt succeeded yet but we suppose as long as folk are willing to believe that their destinies are entirely governed by political parties ye will find n niaii cnrnpto thfv other s blaming and viceversa and the results of the election as found on tuesday morning prove that the public mind still seeks fprs cure in a change of government the liberal was elected by an increased- majority forgive our wavering faith the following item from the alliston herald has been drawn to our attention the actcnfwbe pniss under its present editor- toaa lost none of its apposition to the liquor trade which existed under his predecessor the announce ment that premier henry would consider permitting f beer and wine to be consumed at hotel tables was seized on as the subject of a vigorous editorial protest by the friz phzss no doubt the fkee press has seen the denial of such a statement by the premier of the province had the acton editor the pleasure of a personalacquaintance with mr henry there would be no doubt a6outthe premiers attitude mr henry is as uncompromising an opponent of strong drink as to the editor of the acton free press or as his predecessor was we thank you brother for the compliment and the word of encouragement that we have lost none of the vigor of the former editor of the free press in opposition to the liquor traffic unfortunately we aretoot personally acquainted with premier henry and pur most intimate recollection of him goes back to one time when during altlecnontclimpaignrher addressed an audience in the town hall here there was another unfortunate circumstance in connection with his visit to acton he cariie orijatmonday even ing when the young peoples societies of the vari- oils churches were holding their meetings and churches were aglow with light the audience at the hall was hot large and mr henry on that oc casion inferred on the public platform that the churches were opposed to the party under whose auspices he was speaking and wer6 holding meetings in opposition to the political meeting and then the ministers of two of the churches told mr henry at the meeting that they had arranged the church meetings early to allow the young people to attend both meetings on the same evening and they were present at the political meeting so it is just as you say brother we have been unfortunate in pur in timacy with the premier of ontario our relation ship with the former revered editor of the free press was of longer standingin fact of over two decades if mr henry is as strong and uncom promising an opponent of strong drink as the late h p moore then the temperance forces may feel assured they have a true and unwavering ally and if the comparison is just as our brother editor puts it we hasten to apologize for any vigorous remarks which were occasioned by the announcement of the premier which was afterwards retracted and ex plained by him at the time we wrote we were un aware that any explanation was forthcoming a a day for thanksgiving a day set apart for national thanksgiving has been designated as next monday october- 10 in a year when general conditions are not as bright as they have been previously many will possibly con sider a time of thanksgiving in a mood of sarcasm and yet have we all not a great deal for which to give thanks providence has given abundances in this fair dominion ample has been provided for all so that none need go hungry true the plane upon which we live may have to be altered to meet condi tions as we find them but possibly a lower type of living may be possible without much hardship if the distribution of lifes necessities is unfair that is no fault of providence and as so we approach thanksgiving day we can find much to be thankful for- wealth as it is measured by the dollars and cents yardstick is not the greatest asset in the worldr healtrrand the faithfulnessanddevotionof loved ones especially when things are adverse are things that are greater and more to be cherished than the accumulation of money home and homelives that are happy are something that moneynever can buy never mind your troubles they will multiply without your attention but fqcpnsday at least count your causes for whichto give thankfulness and they- will outweigh your difficulties and in the enumerating make you more contented and truly- happy all sorts of duties put upon citizens if we-were-asubscribertp-the- free press and not the editor we would write a letter to the editor but since we are what we are it is necessary to write our opinions in the editorial columns the past week it has been our pressure to witness four of the chautauqua programmes which were presented in acton previously we had been financially inter ested in the attendance and could not very well express an opinion but this year it is different and we feel that we can personally express our ap preciation on the matter we have always believed in these programmes and were one of the first to help bring therti to acton our word of appreciation this time we desire to go to the committee who sponsored this event weve heard volumes of explanation on the why and wherefore of chautauquas needs of a guarantors list until we have no argument left from that standpoint but without a cotrtrntttee chautau qua will not come it is to these local folks who willingly sacrifice time and effort and some moneys without hope of financial gain that we want to for ward our thanks for the reasonably priced entertain- mentwewere privileged to hear all sorts of citizen ship duties are taken up by menand womeniitall walks of life all of them are essential to the welfare and uplift of the community we believe the sponsoring of- chautauqua was a worthwhile citizenship duty we thank those who performed it for others and ourselves- editorial notes can all you canseems to be the motto of every housewife just now and thosefour words are good advice to anyone the worlds series baseball ended very abruptly and very decisively this year ri would appear that the chicago representatives were not in the same class with new york when it came to baseball over in alliston the chautauqua not only left a trail of delighted people according fa the alliston herald but there was also a nice little sum of money left in the treasury for possible emergencies when the programmes return next year according to the bereaved i have found a new use tor the optimist our car you know and that is to use it as a portable sunroom 6o often i long to be but in the sun shine but find the wind too cold to be pleasant and there seems no place to go where one can enjoy the fresh air and yet be out ol the wind and now comes the optimist to the rescue all she needs is to toe backed out and parked somewhere in- the- sun windows up against the wind and windows on the lee side open the back seat is beauti fully comfortable with plenty of room to p ones tired and aching feet now i aslc you could anyone possibly think of a better way to take ultra violet rays and scribble away at the same time fwhy in the name ot wonder do we women shut ourselves up in the house so much when there are a hundred and one jobs that could be done just as well outside fresh air and sunshine are an absolute panacea for practically every kind of nerve trouble and yet we run up doctor bills and swallow tablets and tonics wholesale in our endeavor to secure what nature will give b for nothing what a pity there isnt a tax oa sunshine then we should all be run ning after it im glad there isnt though because one more tax and we should be- sunk and what i would do without sunshine dear only knows just at present besides improving my health and utilizing my time i am also getting quite a lot of amusement out of watching molly pat and peter rooner with my old bicycle they are having a great time it is only lately the children have learnt to ride and everywhere they go peter goes too yes i am really enjoys tog myseltr-writlng-at-tlmes-and-watch- lng the fun the children and dogs are having together so often i nndtfone is too busy to play oneself then the next best thing is watch somebody else at play it is almost as satisfactory now whats happened loud barking and wild shrieks and screams oh if you could only see pat was just getting off the bicycle and peter got hold of the seat of his pants and helped him to alight i now there is nothing but a tangled heap of bicycle boy and peter now pat has managed to extricate him self ah yes it is just as i thought there is a very necessary piece of patching to be done in the near future we have been having a real touch of fall weather this- week frost- rain and cold winds by the way there is a trap waiting for the unwary who are not overly fond of early rising supposing someone says to you quite a frost we had last night for goodness sake dont look surprised and admit you didnt know it because you most certainly would have known had you been up early enough to see it so your ignorance is a dead glveaway because there can be quite a sharp white frost first thing in the morning and yep not a sign of it half- anhour after sunrise and if you are still snoozing between the blankets what can you fenow about the glory of the morning one morning this week there was even a crust of ice on the water trough yes i know because i saw it that same night molly and i went to work and picked all the ripe and halfripe toma toes that we could find about a bushet of them and then we cut all the dahlias and put labels on each plant with its name and colr in fact we made great preparations against a sharp frost and of course as you may suppqse that night the weather changed and- it didnt freeze at all isnt that always the way this is grand weather for a tramp through the woods andflpldstif only one can find the time and incentive yesterday for instance prince broke parole got out from his- rightful pasture to wander off to the back of the bush to talk to some nelghbor horses partner suggested that i might takerope and halter and go after him to tell you the honest truth i was not hankerin after fie job at all because there were plesgl wanted to bake before breakfast and other odd jobs to do but of course i left my pies and went after prince i had hardly started up the lane before i began to enjoy myself the sun had just thrown aside his cloudblanket and was smiling cheerily to greet the new born day there was a slight breeze blowing not a wind just a movement like fairies whispering iff the leaves a heron startled by my presence got up from the creek and winged his graceful flight towards the bush and the birds how sweet and clear their song were they i wonder singing their song of harvesthome dear br little birds who hatch and rear their tamlly against such fearful oddsl always at the mercy of hawks crows and cats to say nothing of bad boys who steal their eggs and yet they sing how glad they must be if at the end of harvest they have raised a family without loss or injury their responsibility is over their young have been r knowledge and strength to cope with life and for a season the parent birds are free havent we as much cause for thank fulness as these little birds that sing surely we have en let our song of harvesthome be as spontaneous and cheery thankful that while we may have troubles the sunshine of life is always greater than the cloud no child should be allowed to suffer an hour from worms when prompt relief can be got in s simple but strong remedy mother graves worm exterminator slats diary by
