methodist church rev mr waddell and mrs blake van- natter visited friends in hamilton last week mr duncan ferguson is holidaying with friends at manltoulin island i limehouse this months meeting of the womens institute was held at the home of mrs john meredith fifteen members were present and enjoyed a most pleasant and profitable afternoon following regular business mrs jos mcgowan gave a de monstration on cake baking and mrs johnson contributed an article on legis lation the roll call was responded to with a verse on school law a number of friends from the village attended the funeral on saturday of the late mir longstreet who passed away quietly at his home lot 3 eighth line erin mr and mrs win gibbs have been moving during the last few days and will live in mr kennedys house over on west side mr w a lane has had electfic wir ing put in his house during the past week and will soon have electricity this modern advantage has been a great blessing to our community makin it possible to have so many conveniences we would otherwise have to do without country fairs are the order of the day better weather than has been the rule during the past week would be ap preciated but everyone is glad of the rain it has been a great help for pas ture root crops and fall grain mr mark given returned home early sunday morning after having attended lindsay fair and was able to win some prizes even though competition was keen the directors and workers for acton fair deserve great praise for the excel lent way it is managed exhibitors also deserve praise for the interest they take in producing such perfect varieties and no one ever comes away disappointed after having attended both tuesday evenings performance and wednesdays many features llmehouse schoot be held at the school on lot 20 fifth line on tuesday september 25th the children are all working to make this fair a real success r corn is a real good crop lots of stalks are nearly 12jfeet tatt- cutting and silo filling will be in full strtng in a few days a great many are growing corn this year owing to the scarcity of other feeds mr gowdy and mr kirkpatrick have been busy during the past week making valuable repairs to the saw mill in pre- parationfor another large cut of lumber for some years the dam has been leak ing so while the water was low advant age was taken of this time to find and repair the leaks and do other work to flume and wheel some excellent pickings of eatable varieties of mushrooms have been found this week so those fond of them have been feasting mr and mrs chas meredith and mr and mrs j s noble and families left last thursday night on a motor trip with mr arthur scott as-lchafleury- to manltoulin island they went via north bay sudbury and little current the round trip will total about 875 miles they arrived home tuesday this week having had a wonderful trip and visited with their parents and numbers of friends mr and mrs wright mr doughty and mrs marshall visited meeting of the nassaga- weya branch of the bible society was held in the ebenezer united church on tuesday evening mr wadland of tor onto a representative of the bible society gave an interesting address on the work toeing carried on the officers elected were president mrs nelson anderson secretary mr arthur dia mond and two new collectors were ap pointed messrs linos mcmillan and alex clark for the knatchbull line and the old collectors for the other lines the anniversary services held in the nassagaweya presbyterian church last sunday were greeted with a full house both morning and evening sacramental service was held in tho ebenezer united church last sunday morning conducted by the pastor rev mr somervule mr and mrs r j king mrs dunlop and mr and mrs long of toronto visited with mr and mrs w f darby of knatchbull last sunday rally day service will be held in the sunday schools of the township on sun day september 30th silo filling is the order of the day some excellent fields of corn are being harvested this fall hillsburg mimosa disciple churchwas the scene of a very pretty wedding on wednesday september 12th when gladys lillian only daughter of mr and mrs r j robertson of orton was united in mar riage with edgar gray second son of mr and mrs alex gray of hillsurg the church was tastefully decorated with mountain ash asters fern and gladioli with the guest pews distinguished by white asters and ribbon rev j p mc- leod officiated the bride entered the church with her father to the strains of lohengrins wedding march played by charles robinson of guelph the brldj looked lovely in a gown of silk chiffon over white satin her veil of embrold ered net set in cap effect and finished with silver trimmings fell in soft folds in a train she carried a bouquet of joanna hill roses and lilyofthevallsy and maiden hair fern and finished with streamers of white satin ribbon she was attended by miss jessie mckinnon of guelph fittingly attired in pink net over old rose silk with cap and shoes to match and carried a shower bouquet of ophelia roses and ulyofthevalley tho groom was attended by his brother mr marie gray of toronto the ushers were messrs lloyd miller and wilfred awrey after the ceremony a reception was held at the home of the brides parents where the bride and groom were assisted in receiving by the brides mother mrs robertson wearing a black georgette gown and a corsage of sweet- peas and maiden hair fern the grooms mother was attired in a lovely black georgette crepe gown with silver trim ming and wearing a corsage of sweet- peas and maiden hair fern the bride and groom left on a trip to toronto niagara falls and detroit on their return they will reside on the grooms farm sixth line erin miss viva miller who has been visit ing with mr and mrs will miller re turned to her home at colllngwood on sunday we offer our sincere sympathy to mrs dougal reid and family in their recent sad bereavement the ladies aid of coningsby united church held a very successful pie social in the church on monday efenlng a good crowd assembled to enjoy the fesl- tival and firretprogranv which was given a gathering in the form of a picnic was held at the home of mr and mr wm chcyne in honor of mr james clieyne who is returning to his home in florida after an extended visit here with friends friends were present from rockwood guelph centre inn bramp ton orton and coningsby a very en joyable time was spent by everyone the afternoon was indulged in softball races and contests after a supper of sand wiches cake ice cream and melons a short program was presented after which the gathering was brought to a close by the singing of god be with you till we meet again a toxoid vaccination for diphtheria was given to children from g months to 12 years in the mimosa school on mon day september 17th a reception was held at the home of mr and mrs alex gray on monday evening in honor of the recent bride and groom mr and mrs edgar gray the fore part of the evening was spent in dancing while at 1145 mr george bryan read an address and messrs j c barnes and clarence byran presented the bride and groom with two lovely wicker chairs and a fernery tho groom made a fitting reply in his usual pleasant manner lunch was served and the remainder of the evening was spent in dancing mr ross mckinnon is quite busy with his outfit filling silos these days a corn and wclner roast under the auspices of mimosa disciple young people will be held at the home of mr wm chcyne jr this week we are sorry to learn that little miss martha gibson daughter of mr and mri jas gibson of orton is suffering from an attack of infantile paralysis we hope she will be about again soon burlington eden mills mr norman wilson kkansas city missouri has returned home after being the guest of miss helen reld maple avenue daylight saving ends on sunday in this district mr and mrs w j gash and son have returned from england and will again take up was a suc cessful affair several prizes were awarded to scholars of the different schools on their exhibits which were worthy of note and the young folks are deserving of credit for their efforts in school work the anniversary services at the pres byterian church on sunday were largely attended and the discourses by rev t goodwill b a of hillsburg were much enjoyed the evening service at the united church were dispensed with and rev w j taylor also took part in the service the choir rendered special numbers and selections by the quartette composed of messrs b freure albert gray dr k b waller and a j elliott were appreciated as well as a solo at the morning service by miss eileen bridger of guelph on monday evening the anniversary supper was held in the basement and the good things provided by the ladies of the congregation were done justice to by the larger number who were present followed by a program ofgood variety mr c j mckay student minister was chairman and with his witty remarks interspersed during the evening kept the audience in good humor after the doxology the choir of st pauls church guelph gave a selection as well as soles duetts and quartettes during the pro gram readings by mrs brough miss evans miss grlndell and solos by miss m starkey and mr r tarzwell were well received rev john little also gave a brief address last friday evening a pleasant time was spent at the home of mr and mrs ben hosklng when the young people of the united church met to do the young couple honor on the occasion of their recent marriage progressive crokin- ole was cnjoyed during the evening fol lowed by a presentation to the groom with a hnll tree and mirror mr morris hurd read the address and messrs geo day and wilbert patterson made the presentation mr and mrs a b root were in norwich last week attending the funeral of the late mrs j h entwistle visitors during the past week and the weekend were miss mary stewart of winnipeg dr e f and mrs mccullough and daughter miss marion mccullough of guelph mr robert croft of toronto mr johnston hewat of simcoe dr fred croft of kitchener mr and ms chas garner of gait mr and mrs malcolm smijjh of woodbridge miss the mountain fall ploughing is in full swing at present a number from here attended acton fair yesterday school days are here again a number from here attended the school fair at inglewood last week and report a good time there lb quite an epidemic of colds in our hamlet we are pleased to learn that all are on a fair way to recovery mr martin is still making some de cided improvements to his fishery on the tenth line and gives steady employ ment to a large number of men he also has constructed an uptodate high way from the fishery to the tenth line corner mr c wiggins had the con tract of the grading and also made a very creditable job mr- martin also purposes gravelling he new road this fall erin dame rumor is to the effect that a number of rural teachers and pupils have commenced work on a float to compete for the silver cup and cash prizes for the best float to be exhibited at erin fair fortysix pupils are now enrolled in the classes of erin continuation school and are off to a good start for the years grind in the neverending struggle for knowledge john mclarentlsf rockwood who was recently awarded the contract to remove three thousand yards of earth from leitchs hill on- the guelph road into the gully south of the hill commenced work on monday and has a dozen men with scrapers and trucks rapidly remov ing the required yardage convicted in guelph police court on a charge of reckless driving roy ferguson of erin was fined 10 and costs and his driving permit was cancelled for thirty days the case arose out of an accident when cars driven by ferguson and by howard alison of acton collided the exhibits shown me in the form of photographs show that one car was very much off its course said magistrate watt citizens in the business section of the village were startled by the fire alarm on tuesday afternoon j h gibson and his assistant had been heating a barrel of pitch which they were applying to the roof surface of his garage and when about through the material ran out and mr gibson instructed his helper to put a couple of pails of tar into the barrel immediately after the tar was put in the barrel a chemical action took place and the contents of the barrel boiled over into the fire from which great clouds of emoke belched into the sky and the fire spread in a menacing manner advo cate campbellville several from here attended the anni versary
